Default Driveable HP limit???

OK, I have heard that in most FF cars, when you pass the 250 hp mark, even if you have and LSD, it will be hardly any fun to drive because of torque steer. Thats why a lot of people don't like the new Acura CL as much as the previous one. Having 270 hp and good of torque, when you hammer it, the tires just stray off to the outside of your turn (understeer). So I'm asking for the 88-95 Civic hatch guys to say what they think the affordable power limit is before your car is better off as a drag car and no fun cornering. Thanks.

There are tons of guys on here pushing more than 250...torque steer is how you handle it. Hold onto the wheel tight enough and you can controll it. Also, with the small 4 cyl engines not many are doing 250+ N/A meaning all 250 to the wheels at one time...most are doing it with turbos and with a turbo you have lag so when boost hits your usually at a good speed where torque steer is reduced.

I see, Happyman. Then if I had say a good susp. setup w LSD and rubber, I'd just have to learn how to handle it without killing myself! I wan't to build a badass Turbo SOHC, guys like Bisimoto have passed 500 HP with 'em, and there cheap, LIGHT and everywhere. They just ain't get no respect because of brothers B, K, and F.

its really not an issue. if you know your car well enough you should be able to drive smoothly.

With lsd you won't have any torque steer(or not much anyways).

If you have tires that can handle the power it's not an issue. Put civic sized tires on a mustang or corvette and it wouldn't be able to handle the power either.

Your biggest worry is destroying CV joints. I don't drag race and I'm careful in 1st gear but I still bust them.

I figure I'll stop at about 4 billion hp. Seems reasonable.

Thrty8Street, why ju no like FI'ed 4cyls? They make the most output/L this side of a rotary! The only downside is that to make v8 power reliably, you need to drop a decent bit of cash for parts and tuning. And I wish people treated their Hondas better, just because you didn't pay a lot of money to buy your car doesn't make it cheap!! It is hard to find an EF or even an EG hatch that is immaculate. People ride Civics hard 'till the wheels fall off!

Same here, I've shifted to 4th on the freeway at redline and busted CV joints on my hatch

Other than that 247whp is easy to control, sh*t, after 6 months of turbo my car feels slow again...

Too much power for the street is 1hp or tq beyond the bare minimum you need to accomplish a goal, i.e. an E.T. or trap speed. The more horsepower, the better the driver is going to have to be and the more aware he is going to have to remain in order to drive it carefully and safely. There are guys in the FI forum running 620whp B18C's (a mere 450 on "pump gas") and they say their street setting feels slow and weak =p.

It depends on the driver. My EG has 283whp NA and I can control it just fine. Yeah there is hella torque steer, unless I grip the wheel well. Most of this is cause the Mugen LSD hasen't gone in yet... I don't plan on stopping the mods until Desiree (my EG) puts 500+ to the ground. Keep in mind that this 283whp is put to the ground with "stock" tires... Just stay within your limits and you will be fine...

You have that much power and no LSD. Dam I hope I'm never next to you when you floor it. End up knocking me off the road.
