Pulled over for the first time (in NY no less)
I was told a few "facts" by the state trooper who pulled me over last night and I'm curious if any other NY R's can back up the info I received.
I was pulled over after leaving a toll booth... shifting at 4500 rpms, rainy night about 11:30PM.
Officer said he pulled me over for tinted windows and a loud exhaust. I understand the tint since NY is strict on that. Mine is pretty dark.
What I was surprised at was that he told me that any aftermarket exhaust which is louder than stock is technically illegal. Obviously 99% of our aftermarket exhausts are over that limit.
He told me that he wasn't able to make out my AZ tags until he had pulled me over, due to the rain, and that he couldn't write me a ticket even if he wanted to since I am legal in AZ. Thats great. I guess the ol' AZ tags were useful last night.
He called the law the "fast n' furious law" and said that they are writing tickets left and right.
We talked for about 15 minutes. I invited him to the first Finger Lakes autocross in two weeks. Told him he should bring his Suzuki Swift (yeah, he confided quite a bit to me... however I was never offered a mustache ride)
Overall an interesting experience.
I believe ANY exhaust that did not come with the car in NY is illegal. Technically they can say that an autozone replacement exhaust is illegal even if its an OEM replacement. I think they really only enforse the noisy exhausts though, which can sometimes be mistaken for aftermarket when in vattack mode
Ive been pulled over for the same thing, however he soon realized I had a STOCK exhaust.

I've been pulled over a LOT in NY
(23 times total since 16 yrs old)
Any "off road use only" exhaust is illegal according to local po's. My first week w/ the R I got pulled over for a "loud" exhaust (actually just put my AEM in and was jerking around)and had to get out and point out the cat and resonators to the cop before he let me go.
Any who--> I have never heard of the F&F laws but whatever "they " say is right, right?

If this were in fact a law, SEMA would have something about it on their website. Massachusetts is the only state that I saw that was even considering anything like this right now. This is from SEMA's website:
URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT
After being stalled since last year, a bill (H.B. 1722) to ban the sale or installation of “an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust” has been approved by the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Public Safety. It has not been revised from last year’s version and remains an extremely damaging piece of legislation. The bill has now been referred to the House Steering, Policy and Scheduling Committee.
Call or E-Mail the Members of the Steering, Policy and Scheduling Committee (List Attached) Immediately to Request Their
Opposition to H.B. 1722
• H.B. 1722 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions.
• H.B. 1722 does not supply law enforcement with a clear standard to enforce, allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether or not a modified exhaust system is in violation.
• H.B. 1722 fails to recognize that aftermarket exhaust systems offer increased performance, which can make a vehicle safer by improving its ability to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.
• H.B. 1722 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems with more durable, better performing options.
Call or e-mail the members of the Steering and Policy Committee (See List Below) today to oppose this legislation. This bill tramples on the rights of vehicle enthusiasts in Massachusetts.

yikes,
I was worried the exhaust issue would be at the forefront of some troopers/officers "plans" for '04. I hd been pulled over late last year and the oficer informed me that "anything other than stock was illegal" although I do NOT believe him, but I have yet to search the legislation in question. I think this yer will be bad for exhaust tickets, some officers certainly will use it as a "reason" to pull over anyone the want to... and that sucks.
So much for the get-away-clean-phrase...
"Officer, I actually do race this car on weekends and it is tested for noise level at every event, thats twice a month and it has never been too loud to compete, not once in 3 years!"
but... hey you were lucky to get out of the ticket! whoa! Looking forward to seeing you out at the FLR autox's! Are you ready for the 25th at RIT?

He actually told me that since its legal in AZ, and I'm registered there, that he can't really write me a ticket. Technically I'm "just visiting" NY for a few months...

Virginia also has state laws on the books since early last year which essentially prohibit the use of any exhaust "which is not of the factory type". Been there, done that.

We like it that way though.
Keeps the riff-raff to a minimum.

As far as the exhaust, they will write you anything they feel like writing. Usually the small tickets like that are them being in a good mood and not giving you a speeding ticket.
Must have been a nice cop to stand out in the rain and talk to you for 15 minutes though...

Wow !( knocking on wood) You got pulled over for a loud exhaust and tint...
I haven't been pulled over for anything in a long time.
With all the loud crapy mufflers everyone has on I'm surprised they even write tickets for it.
NYC can't touch me On equipment violations, I got NJ tags in NY
But if I step foot in NJ I'm done

I think i have the record for number of times pulled over!
. NYPD tends to get real creative on excuses to pull people over and harass them. I guess its the fact that they have nothing to do or atleast SOME of them.
The most creative one has been when i went to pick up my girlfriend from work a little while ago and i was doubled parked in front of a car. They told the car that i was in front off to move away with the their loud speaker. I was within 3 minutes surrounded by a total of 4 cop cars including 2 detective cars, and i was told to give up my keys and put my hands on the steering wheel. Then i was told that the reason i was pulled over was because they ran the plates and they said that they came back stolen. I was like Reallyyyyyyyy!. They took my registration, insurance, car keys, etc and i had a flashlight pointed at my face for 20 min. Then they came back to the car and they had the audacity tot ell me that they ran the plates again and everything was okay that i was good to go. Some coincidence i would say.
When your in NYC be very afraid of a$$hole cops. All are NOT like that but they seem to be very easy to find.
