AT shifter cable
When the shifter becomes stiff like that its usually the cable in 90&94 series Accords.. I've seen cables become stiff from soda, coffee spilled on the shifter assembly as well..
i know this is a reincarnated post, but hopefully beneficial for any searchers.
I noticed that shifter in my '92 auto integra had become very stiff. The extra effort need to slide it btw gear selections caused me to over compensate and blow by the gear selection. Then I went back and forth several times before finding the dumb gear, very annoying.
Didn't know what it was so i disconected the shifter cable from the tranny end. Should be too different from the accord, but i had to remove a chassis crossmember, two engine->tranny stiffeners, and the torque converter housing. then simply remove a cotter pin, once more bolt and it was free.
The good news was the shifter was still stiff, so the tranny was fine. In fact i can easily move the gear changer pin by hand power, with no shift stick leverage.
So next was to remove the cable from the shift lever end. Two bolts underneath, removed the whole lower dash inside, to get the center console off. A little pin/clip, simply, holds the cable attached.
After detachment, i found the shifter free-shifts easily, so its the cable. It feels almost siezed in its sheath. Attaching one end to a vice, i had to put my foot one the bench to get the leverage to slide it.
Gonna order a new one tomorrow, sounds pricey, but it'll be worth it.
And by btw, that cable went downhill FAST.
