Default OT: 'Bad Axle'(?) Not Being Fixed - Results?

I'm posting this here because I respect the tech. knowledge a lot of members on this forum have... My father has a G1 teg ('87), suffering from the "clicking axle" syndrome. I've read other posts on this board about this, saying to replace the axle, but he is hesitant to do so. My question is what is the worse that can happen if he does not? Can the wheel lock up, or lose it's steering capability while he's driving? I'm about to pay for and have it replaced for him, but wanted to know what the clicking sound means, and what it is leading up to if not fixed asap.

The clicking means that the axle is on its way out, and if upon visual inspection, the boot is greasy and or ripped. You can definetly expect axle failiure very soon. Your father may get stuck on the road, not much else can happen. If the axle snaps the car wont move. But nothing "drastic" will happen.

Just make sure it's not a wheel bearing/hub on it's way out. Ever seen a front wheel drive car lose a front wheel? I have. It's not pretty.

Yep, I just repaired this on my sold 1993 GS-R. Once the driveaxle has begun "clicking", you need to replace it, not just the boots. If it's the original piece, expect a "not-so-pleasant" job. That is, if you were planning on doing it yourself. Be careful not to damage any seals in the process

Thanks for the advice, guys.... The local Acura dealer estimated (over the phone) ~$250 if that is the only problem; does that sound like a fair price for parts/labor? This car is on it's last legs as-is, and I'm wondering if we should look elsewhere for service.

Damn, $250?!

Remanufactured driveaxle from autozone is about $55.00 (after rebate from core charge).

You could always buy the part, and then have it installed as I'm sure the OEM driveaxle would be 3 times Autozone's price.

Just my opinion

yeah man thats a rip off! buy an axle from local autostore.. or you can even go look for one at the local junkyard, and if you know what you are doing you can change it yourself, otherwise pay a local mechanic, he should not charge more then 60 for labor. You might need a new cv boot.. thats 12 bucks w/grease.

hth.. do not let the dealer rip you off.. and do not drive on it for too long cause it can brake, i have seen them snap and the wheel can literally fall off.

If you buy a remanufactured axle, it comes complete with cv boot too

i'm currently having a weird problem with my car that's been happening for a while. When my car drives there is a severe left to right shake (steering wheel moves side to side) like the wheel is actually moving off the hub or something, and of course i have no clue wtf is going on. I've been dealing with this problem on and off forever and no one seems to be able to help me. IF someone helps me fix my problem, i'm offering $50 towards the correct solution to this. I hate driving my car totally at this point in time

This may seem elementary, but have you checked your tires recently. I know that bad alignment, if neglected, can warp them and cause what you described. Aside from the "shaking", can you hear any abnormal sounds while driving?

I just replaced my front tires, they were worn a little on the inside, and were like that when i got them. I thought one of my rims was bent, but i sent it off and it's straight. My car only has this "vibration" when i put a load on the motor. I really don't get it I do hear a really weird noise with the vibration, it's a high pitched squeek, like something is moving back and fourth. I have a camber kit on the car, could that hardware be a culprit? I'm at such a loss to what's wrong w/my car. thanks for your help, any more ideas?

Jared
