Default Auto Tranny slipping- Need Advice

I have a 96 Honda Accord with 226,000 miles on her. She's been running like a champ until recently. Today my tranny has been slipping. I almost didn't make it back to work from lunch. It feels like the tranny is stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear and then my "check engine" light came on. Any idea what the problem could be? I just had my tranny fluid drained and filled Saturday and its full. A new tranny is not in my budget right now. This couldn't have happened at a worse time then now. I'd appreciate you guy input. Thanks.

you should still be able to manually "shift" the auto-select thru the gears in the worse case. How has the tranny been taken care of thru it's life?

A flush might be in order - search for user: escobar and his comments on auto-tranny flushing

Did it start acting up right after the drain and fill of fluid? Did you use HONDA fluid?

To answer your questions.....

I haven't had a chance to have the cel code checked.

I can go in reverse just fine, but in drive it stays in 1st. It wouldn't shift up or down manually either.

It was slipping intermittently when the car was cold but cleared up once everything warmed up. That is the main reason I did the drain and fill. I figured it was either low or time to be changed. They used Dexron III/Mercon ATF. It was done at a quick lube type place called Kwik Kar.

I've gotten the tranny drain in fill pretty much as scheduled. The only abuse I've done is down-shifting to 3rd when I've been challenged to a race at 60mph or more. Those cases were few and far between.

Go get a case of Honda Atf, drain it, fill it, drive it a mile or 2, then do it again. Do this three times and it might help. I just had a bad tranny last week that J-lube put Dexron Mercon in. Not the whole cause of the problem but it will make it worse. Good luck.

Chances are that it's toast. About the only chance you have is getting the fluid out.
Even then you'll probably need a tranny. I just talked to a mastertech about it and he suggested prayer.

it sounds like your tranny is more "sticky" than slipping. I'd really try the tranny flush first.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I appreciate it. I checked my tranny fluid level and it looks to be over filled. Per Haynes Auto repair manual the fluid should be checked with the car off within 1min of the engine being shut off. The level should be between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick. Well, I follow the directions and my fluid level is past the upper level mark. I don't know if this would cause severe slipping. I called the manager of Kwik Kar and he told me to bring it in so he can take a look at it. I dropped it off after work and he'll look at it in the morning. Hopefully its nothing serious. If it is and his shop is at fault I'm going to have a hell of a legal battle on my hands. We'll see what happens. Wish me luck. I love my Honda. Even though I own a 2003 350Z I drive my Accord 80% of the time. Worst case senerio I'm going to save for a h22 swap. Does anyone know if the existing a/c system will work with a H22? It gets too hot here in Texas not to have A/C.

Just don't let him tell you it's because it's overfilled. It needs to be flushed and filled with Honda ATF. Especially the late 80s and early to mid 90s autos only liked Honda fluid. i've seen more than one tranny roasted by dexron 3. Alot of the small shops in town send their tranny services to us because they don't stock Honda ATF.

that comment was uncalled for, not everyone has the funds to do a 5spd conversion, and some dont know how to drive a manual also... and if you live in a high traffic area youll love the auto...

most shop check Hondas running there dorks, over filling will cause seals to blow! I'm adding a few more things to check? First the shift packs are know to get plugged up, if you take them off there is a screen that will need to be cleaned off, also soak the shift pack in carb clean (not the whole thing just the part that has the hole in it) buy powering up the shift pack(ground the case and each wire is a power wire) you can open and close the shift pack while spraying carb clean in the hole this should free up the shift pack enough that it will operate better. if this doesn't at least help you may need a trans.
