Default VAFC with simple bolt-ons?

A post I read recently made me think of this. Some guy was going to get a VAFC, and his only mods are AEM CAI and some cosmetic stuff. Even if one had a full I/H/E system, would it even be worth it to get a VAFC? My past impression is that you only really need it if you have cams or some major mods done. I am sure I'll get differing opinions on this one.

i have I/H/CC/E and i have a VAFC..it will help because u can lean out the rich stock fuel settings and change the VTEC x-over which can help in some cases.

yes you can do that, but remember those a/f meters are not wide band and not as accurate as dyno wide band a/f meters are.

the C in your I/H/C/E = Chip?

I knew that Hondas run really rich from the factory. But how exactly will it help my car to lean it out? More hp on top end?

Maybe it's a cat converter

I believe he was referring to a High Flow Catalytic Converter.

Thanks for the help Jack. I guess the other ingredient to picking up that 5hp (besides the VAFC) is a good tuner. I am at 172whp right now, I think with the proper meathead tuning my ****, I should be at almost 200 with just Header+exhaust+cat+VAFC.

Wait, huh? 200whp? Nah, but you'll get close to 180. A little more if your car was really strong from the factory (was the 172whp stock? Got the plot to post?)

Ok Pat maybe 200 is a little high. Car has 171.4hp/125tq with Comptech Icebox and timing advance. It was also badly in need of an oil change. So let's figure about 172. Then add Carsound Cat, JDM header, SMS exhaust (this is what I hope to have sooner or later). then **** around with fuel settings and gain another 5-6hp as the car in Jack's post did with similar mods. I figure that the H/E/C and good tuning is worth about 15hp on the safe side. So 172+15 is 187. Again, I think that's a bit conservative, but there's only one way to find out. After all that I should be closer to 190 than 200, although I have had a lot of people tell me that my car is a pretty strong example of a B18C5.
