Default 2Q's - Distributor O-ring, Timing

Well, I noticed a leak between my distributor and block, so this morning I went to replace the o-ring. Low and behold, I don't think there was one there?? I looked on the distributor housing itself, and the block, and no signs of ANY rubber ring.
Question 1:
Is the o-ring supposed to go on the BASE of the distributor? Basically the surface that directly interfaces with the block? (if you have a pic, that would just be awesome) Or in that little groove that is slightly away from the base?
Question 2:
I hooked up my timing gun, and I noticed that there was a white line, and a black? line, which one gets placed in between the "notches"?

Thanks in advance!

i recently changed my o-ring there also with the same problem for my 5th gen accord, yes it is directly touching the block.. there should be a o ring there, if not replace it it might have fell while u were pulling it off? but definately there is one there.. with the timing im not too sure, maybe others might know how to help with that..

the way i do it with timing is that i move the distributor up and down,,,,while listening to the engine(the way it works.) then i start it agan and see if it starts right away(timing is ok) if it strugles it meens that u got to get the distributor back a lil bit.
