JDM Type-R registration
Hey guys I'm just doing some research. I was wondering if any of you or know anyone that has registered their JDM ITR legally here in California. I just want to know the steps I need to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated also if you know anyone selling one in the Socal area I am very interested.
just a heads up, u will prolly get no help here...not a lot of people know how to do it and those who do guard the secret like its frickin gold....but gl to you anyways...i would love to get a CTR over her to complament the ITR or maybe a NSX-R now that would be sweet
you have to get it signed by the dmv and by a california shrieff after you pass all smog tests. this process costs alot of money. you can find a jdm itr in japan used for about 5-7gs. but to get it legally registered in cali. it will cost about 5-7gs.... i have a couple friends with jdm itrs. you can pm me or email me at dacrazviet@yahoo.com
from my past experiences I helped get a sir-g registered. If you want to have a clean title on your itr then you must follow these steps.
1. get all paper work from importer. IE deregistration paperwork, bill of sale, all coresponding docs.
2. go to DMV ask to speak to the manager when you get there.
You will then pay for all fees off the bat, they will issue you a red driving sticker. You now can legal drive you vehicle if you have insurance.
3. Make an appt with your local CHP inspection center. they will be the ones who issue you a US vin for the car. or possibly they may allow you to use the exsisting vin, if you ask nicely.
4. you can get the car smogged, if you run some really good gas like cool blue or something, and make sure everything is on the up and up you should pass with the jdm cat.
5. now you must go back to dmv at this time they will fully register the car, OR you ask to go to DOT and this will allow dmv to issue a clean title to the car.
:::: IF you don't want a clean title, ie; rebuilt title, then just bypass DOT and you're good to go..
Your fees will not be more than 1,000.00 at all..
this is a long process it will take roughly 2-3 months for all this to happen.

correct me if im wrong but you cant pass the DOT inspection unless you have the crash test results with you?? so you cant get the car DOT certified.?? or can you explain what you did.

and it wont be a rebuilt title it will be a salvaged title which will be much harder to insure with fully coverage depending on insur. company..

first talk with your local customs office, to see if you meet their criteria of having a imported car here.
then talk with dot and epa office to see whats needed to be done to get the car certified.
then find a reputable impoter.
never buy a car with no papers and just a promise that it can be registered.
if the car is here LEGALLY then it should atleast have custom documents.
btw, you don't have to crashtest an integra. but you need a letter from the manufacturer that the car is built the same as u.s. model cars with the exception of being rhd.
honda glass are dot certified already, you don't need to change them.

i heard it cost liek almost 8 G to register a rhd jdm hatchback.. also u will need 2 cus they need to crash one.. unless u want to do body work i think.. thats what i was told from the inlinefour guys they have liek 2 rhd jdm itr and a civic and is for sale but isn't registered.
Well most people here have the right idea. I personally have looked into this for several friends and have helped import many vehicles into the US both LHD and RHD.
Step 1. Find the car that you want. I have a few sources i source cars from, but would preferably not like to share them.
Step 2. Purchase the car with ALL the paperwork, dereg, bill of sale, etc.....
Step 3. Find a shipping agency to ship the car here. This will cost around 2 grand.
Step 4. Call a Registered Importer (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...t03012004.html) With class 2 and 3 and tell them you are in the process of importing a vehicle. This is where it becomes fairly simple yet the most common messed up part.
The RI will check with DOT and make sure the car is authorized for importation to the United States. If it is then you will have to pay US Customs bond and they will release the car. (This bond can be up to 100% value of the car) http://www.cbp.gov/ImageCache/...r.doc
That link provides all the forms needed, and gives a overview of the customs side to importing a vehicle.
Once your car has been released to customs it must go to the RI. Here they will inspect the car, and create a list of what complies with the car and what needs to be changed. (you will also need a letter from the car manufacturer, stating the car has an American counterpart, and can easily be modified to meet US Specs.) They will send this list of what needs to be changed to DOT, and DOT will either approve or disaprove this action. If approved, they will conduct all the necessary work and submit it again to DOT. DOT will then declare this car, registerable in the United States. You will get paperwork from DOT that you must take at the time you register your car in your home state.
This has been a brief jumbeled overview of the things that are needed, and each state is diffrent. If you are serious about doing this i would suggest calling your State BMV, NHTSA, DOT, EPA, Us customs and getting all the information you can.
**This will not apply to Skylines as, RB and Motorex bought exclusive crash test data on the car**
Hope this helps all of you out, and i don't see why people guard this so much, it is all public information, you just have to know where to look, and it isn't hard to find at that. Good luck, and happy importing
