I used 10W-30 motor oil in my tranny, is this bad??
I got a 1994 prelude last week and changed the manual transmission fluid with 10W-30 motor oil because thats what the two mechanics I talked to said to do and both of them worked in a honda dealership. I was searching on this and they (another website) said that 10W-30 is bad for the tranny due the the amount of additives. Is this true am I hurting my tranny by using it, or should I change it right away?? And I was going to use penzoil synchromesh, or GM synchromesh but wasn't sure if it would hurt the seals, plus my dad told me to use with the mechanics recomended.
it's not going to really hurt it... That is what Honda recommends... but I would recommend using the Synchromesh. Both that you mentioned are the same thing.
If you look in your manual it tells you what kinds of motor oil to use. Not all brands are what they recommend... I wouldn't panic but I would change over to synchromesh soon... or if your father wants you to use Honda stuff get Honda MTF.

10W30 is good for your tranny. But depending on the age and mileage of your tranny, you may experience shifting problems... If so, then get yourself synchromesh, if not, let it be... Oil is oil...

I have heard that it is OK to use normal motor oil in a pinch, but it is NOT advised to be used normally.
The guy I talked to said he tried motor oil one time and it began shifting like crap. It works, but the transmission fluid has additives that work spec. for the tranny.
Manual transmission fluid was made for a reason...
