Default Any body ever take their filter off the intake from the tree to traps?

My dad has drag races semi-professionally...he run's like high 7's with his top sportsman cutlass, inside his hood scoop, there is just 2 carbs, sucking in air...no filtration at all, but as soon as we go to tow him back to the pits, we put the foam filter in the hole. I was wondering if anybody ever ran their intake without the filter at the track just to get maximum air flow into it, since its only a quick 1/4 mile run. I couldn't see guys with CAI's doing this...prob because they'd suck up all the trash and dirt, but guys with short rams, ever do it?

I've heard of that, also, I've seen someone create a "ram-air headlight" that has no bulbs and is gutted out. It provides a little extra intake for the race. It sounds like it'd work, for a little bit of a gain.

A guy out here in memphis has a type-r with a JRSC on it. He has the intake coming through one of the inside headlamps.

When i go to the track ill be taking out the filter.

On my old civic hatch I use to run without the headlight and filter at the track. I had a iceman intake style setup where it goes in place of the headlight.

yeah, just gets a little more air into the motor....also, i've seen lots of people take off their hoods before running on the track.

It may look ghetto but i get the best of both worlds. Short ram + true cold air.
Function over fashion!!

i'd imagine the increased air resistance due to a missing hood would negate any possible benefits.

Although this seems right, additional testing has proven it to not be worth while because of the aerodynamics of the location. You're in effect sucking the air out of the hole, because that is a low pressure area of the front of the car. If you can put a 2 foot extension on that area with a velocity stack up front then you'd be golden.

The best gains you're going to get on an intake are a velocity stack and insulation (and resonance tuning, but that's a bit harder). Most filters act as a velocity stack, so just removing the filter won't help you. If you remove the filter, put a velocity stack in its place.

Insulate, insulate, insulate...cold air intakes work!

no, taking off your filter is only going to yield .02158 hp and is totally worthless unless you have alot of mods. Mainly turbo, but maybe a all motor setup with ITBs.

i personaly think that the setup on that red car (ram air through the high beam area) will work. At an event last year at Pittsburgh Race Way Park there was an Integra (2.1 liter all motor) from virginia and he had this same setup, he also has been into the 10's. I fgiure if it works for him it cant be alll too bad of an idea.

I'm sure that's not the reason he was into the 10's.

I don't think it's worth it...IT would suck if a rock came up and the engine ate it. However I see a lot of Supras at the track taking their passenger side headlamp out for better airflow.

Don't know if this is relevant, but the manual for my 95 Astro warns that a missing intake filter can cause backfiring.

If you want "ram air" effect, you need your source of air to be from the base of the windshield. The front bumper is a low pressure area as Tweak stated.

I'd also advise running a velocity stack if you take off the filter.

This is true. When i went to the SHine Street meet last year or so, the Hondata spokesperson (i think he was the founder, i dont remember) explained why it wasnt a good idea to put the ram air where the headlight is. And you're right, its because of the aerodynamics of it. He said it would be better to put it where the mouth of the bumper is, or put a hole into the actual bumper since air hits the bumper head on, where-as if you put the ram air where the headlight is, it flows straight over it.
