Default broken wheel stud...another

so last night im pulling my wheel off to change the tranny fluid and im loosening the lug nut and the bastard breaks off...the lug nut attached to the broken stud...now im running on 3 studs...is it that critical to get it fixed tody or is it not too critical...and does anyone have a GOOD writeup on this???or is it worth spending the cash (how much by the way) and having a shop replace it???

i just fixed a few on mine last week. Its not critical, but it isn't too good. just having 3 lugs weakens the whole assembly.

if your swaping the front....

remove tire, remove caliper, remove rotor, take hammer and find stud you want to remove, swap it with the hammer till it pops out... for install take new stud, grind on side of the lip off the top :you'll see what im talking about:, this will allow it to clear the hub assembly, swap back side with hammer, reinstall rotor, caliper, wheel, and then the lugs...

you may want to take a large thick washer over the new lug and tighen it down to secure the new stud to the assembly.

rears are basicly the same except you don't need to grind the lip off the new stud, but you will need to tighen the stud with a lug nut because you can't hit it with a hammer because of clearnance issues.

Its not good but it is not critical that you do it right away, a friend of mine had teh same thing happen to him when he has tightening them and it broke and he broke 3 fingers when him hand hit the garage floor. It wasnt pretty, if you know anyone that does machine work they can drill it out. my wheel studs have hex key holes on the back. I dont know if you have them but they are always nice

No 3 lugs will be fine for a while but like mansonclubpuir said, it would good to get it fixed in the near future. When I had my car aligned I had a broekn wheel stud and they would not let me leave until i had them fix it. But it turned out it cost me 19 dollars for all 4 new wheel studs to be put in. So I think it was worth spending the 19 for all 4.. I think it will cost you about 10 for all 4 plus your time. Just my input

This method is very hard on the bearings and has been known to cause premature bearing failure.

There are lots of cheap ways to do the swap, but there is also a "right" way. You'll need a press for the right way. If you're going to go the cheap way, at least press out the studs with a c-clamp and a deep socket rather than hitting them with a hammer, and "press" them back in with the lugnut/washer method rather than a hammer.
