Default Spark plugs are freaking WHITE...

I know that that is usually a sign of running very lean. However, I happen to know that I am NOT running lean at all, and if anything, its on the rich side(12.5:1 or so). Im using a non platinum NGK plug, same heat range as stock, with stock wires, so I dont understand why the plugs are so shot. They do have about 15K on them so maybe thats part of the problem, but I didnt think that was excessive. Maybe I should try a platinum plug? I forget the reasoning, but I was told to run a non platinum plug when my motor was built because I think they burn cooler, but dont last as long? Should I maybe try a cooler plug in the 7 heat range? Im gonna try to pick up a set of plugs tomorrow. Ill show you pics of the current ones Im running. They are so bad it almost looks like its flaking off near the tip.

I seem to remember that the time to check your plugs is immediatly after a WOT run. Shows the actuall conditions instead of cruising around and idleing conditions.

This is correct. The car can run extremely lean at idle, and partial throttle - which is fine. But it will make the plugs look whiter than you might care for. But if they are WHITE white, I'd still be a little concerned..... Do you have a lean spot in your WOT maps? timing advanced a little too much? Post a pic!

nope, no lean spots at WOT. partial throttle and idle are anywhere from 13.5:1 and leaner, so maybe thats the cause. Ill post some pics when I actually figure out what plugs Im gonna go with. The plugs look like hell, but I made more power than ever 2 weekends ago on the dyno so Im not too concerned. But I will be changing the plugs anyway sometime today.

Well, to my surprise, it looks like I was running PKR6G platinum plugs. I think I ended up changing them out at one point after my motor was built to make sure I had fresh plugs for tuning purposes. Anyway, heres the pic of them below. They are pretty crappy looking.

I ended up going with NGK BKR6E-11 non platinum plugs because they didnt have the PFR6G in stock. I dont really like how these non platinums feel. The butt dyno tells me they are kinda sluggish, especially at low end where there is even a hint of a stumble/hesitation. When they get the platinums in Ill be putting those in again.

sorry to tell you but platnum plugs suck! running NGK V-Groves is better, if your obsessed with getting good plugs get some NGK IX Iridiums, worth the investment

Not sure how you can say they suck. You have any proof to back that up? They seemed to work pretty good and I made the most power with them in my car 2 weeks ago. Im looking into the Iridiums but there are 2 kinds and not sure if I really wanna switch from platinum since the non platinums I got today I do not like.

Typically Sunoco 94 octane, or Mobil 1 93 octane. no additives. I ran race fuel once back in the day after the motor was built but I dont think that was on these plugs.

Pre-Detonation doesn't exist. I think you mean Pre-Ignition.

Laser platinum (stock type) are pretty good. better than v-groove copper.
Iridium is about the same as laser platinum.

it all boils down to price:

BKR6E-11 = 2-3$
PFR6G-11 = 10-12$
BKR6EIX-11 = 6-8$

How much do you feel like spending?

I spent $1.68 on the BKR6E today, so I figured I couldnt go wrong either way, especially since Trey said he was using them in another post. I figured Id give it a shot, but I dont like them. I got quoted $18/plug for the stock type plats You can get the Iridiums on GBC for $7/plug right now so I think Im gonna give those a shot.

yup i was thinking pre-ignition and detonation at the same time, my bad.

i don't think its detonating with the gas your using, seems like a hot combustion or additives (that the gastation or the refinery put in)causing it to wear like that. maybe try a step colder, or for the hell of it switch gas brand for a while then see what happens, but if you had a lot of hard milage then probly leave it if your car runs good, and just constatly check the plugs
