Hi,

I'm wondering what size the bolts are that connect my downpipe to the turbine housing on the turbo. The downpipe is the standard DRAG 2.5", 5-bolt setup and the turbo is a regular Turbonetics T3/T04b .63 A/R exhaust.

I took it to the Midas that normally replaces these bolts for me, but the guy decided he didn't want to figure out the bolt size, and sent me on my way.

they should be 1.25 pitch

 

With Turbonetic housing, you may run into some standard as well. 95% of the time it is the 8x1.25mm -15-20mm in lenght, but sometimes it is 3/8-24 Standard bolts with the same length.

The correct size is in stans thread above. Take that and go to the hardware store, they will have it. Just make sure and get atleast a grade 8 bolt.

Also just a suggestion, see if the hardware store carries that bolt pattern/size/pitch in a Stud. The studs are a little more expensive, but you won't have to worry about exhuast leaks. Just make sure if you go with astud to get something maybe 10mm longer than the bolt so you have enough room to put on the lockwasher/nut.

 

Explain how I won't get exhaust leaks with a stud rather than a bolt. I use lock washers on the bolts, but they consistenly loosen and fall out 1-2 months after I put them in.

 

well when we installed my turbo I used studs everywhere i could. Turbo-Manifold
Turbo-Downpipe( key places where exhuast leaks occur)

Anyhow we used studs threaded them in, then torqued them down using 2 nuts so they were real tight. Then used loctite(which porlly burnt off anyways) lockwashers and nuts and tightened the **** out of them. In 7 months I havent had one single exhuast leak. On my old Gsr setup we used bolts, and I swear I had an exhuast leak once a week

I don't have the techinical explanation as to why studs are better, but when these regular bolts expand due to the heat, they seem to back out so easy.


Maybe someone can chime in, use some big words, and explain why
