Default Valve Tick from over Rev. 11000+

guys hi.

99 SH 38,000miles

3rd gear 7500rpm ..............Missed 4th..... ......... hit 2nd............11xxx RPM.. ....ZIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!! OPPPSSSS! damn cable shifter.

4 people in the car. approx 3700lbs

No problem except for a standard valve tick.
Many other motors would still be lying on the ground in pieces.
Hale the Might H22!

Ok so i did a valve adjustment.
No luck.

besides 1-2 bent valves what else do you think could of broke?

Valve spring.
Rocker arm.

I figure its only 1 or 2 valves. the tick isnt that bad.

I had the same problem with my B18C1 a long time ago. and just lived with it cause it quited down after a few hundred miles. put another 30-40K on it hitting 8K everyday with No problems.

so im going to
Remove head.
Reface valve seat.
Replace valve(s)
Replace Head gasket, intake gasket, timing belt
and be done with it.

do you think there is any thing else to look for.

Has anybody else done this... im sure somebody has.

Thanks alot.

Hey is the Hondata Heatshield intake Gasket worth the $60?

I myself missshifted at high rpms and I thought I really screwed it up. For a couple of days the idle was messed up (it idled at like 1100 all the time) and then it just went back to normal and it runs all good again.

It's no biggie anyway I'm going to build my head with a whole Skunk2 valvetrain anyway .

Good luck though and let me know how it turns out and what was wrong with..

I agree on the compression test. That would tell you if any of the valves are bent badly. When you adjusted the valves, were any of them off a lot? If so, those would be prime suspects for something bent or broken. As for the tic, are you sure it's in the head and not the block? It could be LMA related. Does the tick go away at higher RPM? I replaced some old sticking LMA's and that made the head more quiet at idle. When you have the valve cover off, you can push down the middle rockers with your finger and see if they move independently, smoothly, and don't stick down. The sticking down part is what could be causing your tick. I hope you get it sorted out and without a lot of $$$. I guess it could have been a lot worse if that is any consolation...

When i did the valve adjustment heres where they were at.

5 6 6 6 6 6 6 5

7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7

im hoping to be able to just reface 1 or 2 valve seats and throw a new valve or 2 in there.

I will probably get to it monday after next.

oh and the tick does not go away at higher rpms.
just gets quit'r due to engine noise.
but when your cruise'n at around 3k or so its defenitly noticable.

damn, i thought I did bad by going to 8500 rpm. How do your cranks survive this kind of beating? I am starting to get vibration through the gas and clutch pedals. THe engine also puts some vibrations after 3k. Is this probably a problem with the bottom end?

Exactly. My ex gf did that in my car. Except I told her to downshift from 5th to 4th at 105mph and she hit 2nd. The tach went over into the ******* speedo.

The motor was built then though, so it didn't do anything but explode the pressure plate.

Oh, and I was behind Russ when he did that. The road disappeared from the smoke. LOL

Damn why are so many of you mis-shifting? arnet you palming the shifter?

I saw this happen in a mates Prelude but that was just cos he was trying to shift really fast instead of concentrating on the accuracy!

But damn thats sucks getting an annoying tick, hope it you get it sorted

I personally think the hondata heatshield is a great mod - before installing it, intake maifold was so hot, coulnt really hold ur hand on it. now, i can grope the crap out of it after ripping on the car for a few hours. it probably lowers intake temp a LOT. installing is kind of a mf though.
