Default Problem with valve keepers/retainers

*EDIT* thanks guys, fixed it

I took the valves out of my head (b20b) to get everything a good cleaning before the new block goes in. Problem is there are 4 valves/retainers/keepers (exhaust)that won't stay together! The retainer just keeps popping off the valve! No idea what is wrong, never had this problem before. Any ideas?

Are you compressing the valvespring enough. Sometimes the angle when you de-compress the spring/if uneven will make a PITA to keep the keepers in. Are the grooves on the valves where the retainers hold rounded/ maybe the keepers need to be replaced. Just thoughts

I don't know if it matters but I always keep each valve train matched with each valve it came off of. I can't see how it pops off...maybe the keepers keep separating a little before you release the spring? Put some engine building lube between the two keepers to keep them on the valve, make sure they're in the rut good, and try to slowly release the spring up.

to put the valves back in i used my hands, thats the way i've always done it. after the retainer is on i give it a couple shots with the end of a hammer to make sure its seated properly. i'm gonna try again with the spring compressor, not sure it gonna make a difference. i also kept the valve with the retainer and keepers together.
