Default Labor cost on strut/shock replacement

I just installed a set of koni yellows and they are way too low(I had the perches on the lowest setting), so I'll need to get a shop to pull them out and reset the perches. How much do you guys usually pay for labor on getting shocks/struts replaced? The shop quoted me $120 to remove/reinstall the shocks and struts, am I getting ripped off? thanks

If I were in NY, I'd do it for $50. Hell, I'd probably do it for less. It's very easy and anyone with the proper tools can do it. I can change mine in less than an hour and an experienced shop should be able to change them in about the same amount of time. $120 for one our of labor is rediculous. Just find an experienced Honda-Tech member and they'll probably do it for you for almost nothing.

Damn...I thought $120 was a bit high....anyone have any good shops in the New York (Queens) area that could do it cheaper?

if i were you i would just do it myself... its really not hard to do... pretty much all you need is a jack, 14&17mm wrenches and/or sockets and some size allen key

I remember reading that a spring compressor is also needed.....is that a standard tool I could pick up at a hardware/autoparts store?

Take that $120 dollars and buy some tools and do the job yourself. Then next time you'll know how to do it and you won't have to worry about being ripped off.

If you decide to DIY, don't forget to buy a high quality torque wrench. Also, did you get new springs to go with the Konis?

All you gatta do is take the shock and spring off (bolts to LCA, and to the body), compress the spring and unskrew the bolt on the hat of the shock, then just take off the spring...

It took me about 15 minutes to do when I adjusted mine...

You'll need something to compress the spring in most cases, sometimes you can have a buddy tie something to the spring and pull it down wile you screw on the hat... You can buy a shitty hand-held spring compressor for falry cheap... The larger units are a lot of money - but they aren't necissary for little honda springs...

Don't pay $150

if you have lowering springs your not gonna need a spring compressor, but if your still on stock springs you can get spring compressors cheap at any auto parts store... some places will even let you rent them out

You don't necessarily need a spring compressor, but it's recommended. I got my compressor at Autozone, where I had to put down a $50 deposit. If you want to buy your own set Harbor Freight sells their spring compressor for $11.

easy spring decompression:

Remove spring/strut assembly from car

Place old shop towel on floor

Place strut lengthwise on the towel, ie, paralell with the skinniest sides.

Fold the back 1/3 over the strut, then the front 1/3.

Cut a hole in the towel for the strut assembly nut to stick out

Point strut away from anything valuable (ie. point it at a wall)

Stand on the two "wings" that you got from folding the towel over

Place allen wrench in tip of strut, and use open ended wrench to remove the nut.

It'll eventually pop off, but it doesn't have all THAT much force. I stuck a cardboard box in front of mine when i did it and it didn't knock the box over.

NOTE: I don't reccommend doin this on say, a suburban or truck or anythin, but it works jsut fine on a stock integra/civic/crx/delsol/etc i've done this exact process like 8 tiems and it works just fine.
