Engine lock up due to lack of oil
Take it apart & see. That doesn't guarantee anything. Maybe the rings scored the cylinder walls, but the pistons, rods, & crank are OK. Maybe some of the bearings are shot. Guaranteed WE aren't gonna be able to tell you because we can't see it from here.

I had it happen a long time ago with my college beater car. I put oil in the spark plug holes, let that sit for a day or 2, then I could turn it with a wrench on the crank pulley. After lots of oil in the cylinders, & cranking, I put the plugs back in & it ran.
Within about a year I decided to overhaul it. I got new rings & honed the cylinder walls. I got new bearings, but when I took it apart the bearings actually weren't damaged. It ran for another 80k miles or so before I sold it.
You aren't gonna know how extensive the damage is until you take it apart & look.

What did the mechanic do to fix it? How much did it cost to just it fixed?

Finally, a success story. I'm going to try that as well. My car is at a performance, but they haven't looked at it yet. So i guess what you did would be a good first step.
