Synthetic or not?
alright, i'm tierd of getting a billion answers on why not to use synthetic and why its better to use synthetic...i have a 2003 with about 13k miles on it, would it be best to just stay with synthetic, or go with castrol gtx? some people i've spoken with tell me that synthetic oil isnt good and some say its GOOD, can someone give a concrete answer? thanx

synthetic really isn't needed as long as you change your motor oil regularly. The thing with synthetic is it doesn't break up as much as dino oil, and is good if you dont change your oil every 5-7k miles.

This isnt 100% true. While you are correct about synthetic not breaking down as soon, it really does make a difference in the way the motor runs. Synthetic oil reduces friction much more than conventional oils, therefore allowing the motor to run harder and more effiecent. I recently switched from regular to Castrol Syntec 5w30, at about 9600 miles, and Im very happy so far...the car actually does seem to run a little harder and smoother (to me at least).

These are touchy topics.
I can tell you synthetics are a better oil than a regular oil.
The thing is, a regular oil is pretty damn good these days.
Better regular oils can do 5K no problem.
I've tried a bunch of different oils in the race car which has a D16 in it.
For a regular oil, I can tell you Pennzoil's high mileage is excellent.
However, I was caught up in the new German Castrol 0w-30 hoopla buzz, so that's what's in there now.
But nowadays, Honda is recommending a lighter weight.
So, that leads me to HIGHLY recommend Mobil 1's 0w-20 oil.
It'll last ~10k miles. It'll hold up for that long too.
Add a Honda OEM S2000 filter made by Toyo Roki, you're very good to go.
You'll need more than 5 quarts though (which is good, too).

I have ran Redline Synthetic oil in my car since it's first oil change when the car had 4k miles on it. Now I change the Syn every 4k miles and the car is running strong and hard. No problems with it so far and I have around 63k miles on it now.
No matter which oil you choose weather it be syn or regular oil it will do the job right.

isn't castrol syntec not a true synthetic oil? i've read that somewhere before. Everyone was using mobil one

Its a synthetic blend, not a full synthetic (I think). So far, it seems to be much better than GTX Drive Hard, which is what Ive been using for years. Im thinking about trying out Motul, its not that much more than Redline.
Last year, I told the dealer to put in synthetic and the advisor said I should wait till 30k miles. This will allow proper time for the engine to break in and proper valve seating, blah blah blah. He said I was doing good by changing the oil every 3k miles. I'm not sure about the 30k mile reasons, but if he's not trying to sell it to me, then I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

Castrol makes syntec (full synthetic) as well as syntec blend (mix of synthetic and dino). It says blend right on the bottle if thats what you have.

All of Mobil 1 oil is a great oil.
There is some burn off, and it's normal.
A lot of Hondas burn oil regardless of their condition.
I'm found of their 0w-20 oil right now.
The Used Oil Analysises posted on oil discussion boards are always excellent.
Some say 0w-20 is too thin, but they should read up more on this stuff.
It show little, to no wear metals in the oil after ~7500 miles.

I use 0-20 also. I switched to it at my 15,000 mile oil change.

so if you had 32K on your EP would you switch to the 0-20W?

Yes.
Go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and do a little reading on the forums, and do a search for Mobil 1 or whatever.
