Default Should I try this mod myself?

Ok,..I know its been covered 100+ times......i've searched and seen them all),...but I really don't wanna pay to have a Steering wheel put on!

I am slightly a "hands on(evil genius)" type of guy,...but the whole SRS thing kinda scares me as well as driving down the road and my steering wheel coming loose!

-I got my JDM ITR MOMO SRS wheel and a friend(VW / Audi tech) is gonna help me put it in(i think).
If I unplug the Negitive Battery cable I don't have to worry about it blowing on me yes?But its when I plug it back in is kinda what scares me.
The wheel has all the wires in it(YELLOW connector (SRS) + the red wire for the horn clearly marked "HORN") coming out the back.

Now I know the main parts: Clip the (2) plastic cable reel clips so that the signal return works,..but also heard there is a "Flush Fitment" issue? Is that right,..it dosent wanna sit flat on the USDM hub @ first or @ all?(PLEASE HELP W? that Question!)

I have a pretty smart guy when it comes to cars helping me,..but he dosen't know about the little "tricks" that has to be done to make it work ya know......tell him to take my tranny apart and put on a new flywheel...he can do that....but this Steering wheel may perplex him a tad(fitment and cable reel part).Wouldn't be so bad if it bolted right up?? Or does it?

lemme know if I should even give this a go and not to worry about the SRS Blowing in my face(please no jokes )
thanx guys

I'll admit when I was putting my steering wheel in I was a little worried too but I survived Just use good judgement and be safe about things, everything makes sense once you get into it

Fairly straight forward.
Just remember, the wheel is sometimes hard to get off, so before you start pulling on it, leave the nut on the spline so when the wheel suddenly comes off it doesn't smack you in the face like it does to some people(me).

If in doubt, go with out. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing. There is a pretty good write up in the Helms Manual.

Thanx guys!

Main thing was the whole airbag Deal,...not going off in my face!(so if the Negitive is unplugged it won't go off,..even w/ a spark?)

But did you all finally get them to line up correct?(Wheels straight/Steering wheel straight)
I read some old posts that it sits a little to the left when going straight??

anyway! I believe I'm gonna try this this week!

Thanx again!!!

It will sit a little to the left or right if the splines don't match up correctly, ie one spline off, just trial and error, my Momo Corse is tilted a little to the right about. Just be patient.

make sure that you wait for atleast 5 min. after disconnecting the battery. The SRS airbags are designed to hold a small charge on there own incase the battery is somehow taken out of comission in a crash.

Austin~ who go to set off a few airbags in his tech class. getting hit by one of those would not be fun. ( you got knocked the **** out- dad in the movie "friday")

Very easy install. Once you get the two tork screws holding on the airbag take off bag and unplug. Be careful the plug may seem tricky because it kinda is a spring loaded sliding clip ( very easy to remove when done correctly ). Once bag is off and out of the way there is a 19 mm nut holding the wheel on. Remove nut and holding the wheel at 3 oclock and 9 oclock and kinda pull while shaking side to side. When you have the wheel off you will have to turn the clockspring a little so the srs plugs will go through the designated hole. Once you have the new wheel on straight the rest is plug n play. The center 19 mm nut is a locking nut so it wont just come loose. Be certain the battery is disconnect while doing this and make sure you hear the airbag plug " click" when installing. I hope this post helps as I have installed the wheel on a few different cars.

well i'm just passing on what i was told. I admit that we weren't talking about honda air bags spisificly but he stressed that we wait several min. after disconnecting battery to begin any work on the stearing wheel.

JDM steering wheel and aftermarket Momo's will not line up exactly. So it will appear that your alignment is off afterwards. Like the wheel will not be totally aligned with your steering.

There are two screws on the side (one on each side) of the steering wheel (located behind plastic covers that you will need to remove first) that holds the airbag. Remove the air bag and you'll see the 19 mm nut the holds the steering wheel in place. You'll have to disconnect the horn and SRS wiring to get access to the 19 mm nut.

Welp!!! Its in!! Peice o' cake!
NO SRS light and it sits straight!!

whats funny is,..I never broke the clips off the reel and the blinkers still cut off???
Weird! everytime i used it and made a turn,..the blinker turned off!!!

DAMN this thing Feels Great! Looks super PIMP as well! It is def smaller,...not to "gay" small but smaller then USDM.

Install was made very simple by you guys! The hardest part was gettin the cap off the side of the US wheel(covering the TORX bolt) under the windshield signal!! That took for ever and craked a tad too

Thanx for the help and it is alot eaiser then it seems!!!

ok Guys!
my First HOW-TO(I'm not a very hands on guy either and I did it very eaisly):
By the way I did it in this order!!
MY JDM MOMO SRS wheel came w/ all the wires in-tact and the horn wire ready to plug as well.
WISH I HAD PIC's but its simple.

1: make sure when you ready to start the wheel and Steering wheel is straight as you can get it.
2: Unplug Negitive BATT cable---wait about 10+ mins(I waited 35 just to be sure )Then Hit the brakes a couple times and flip switched and al that!
3: Pop off the Plastic side peice of USDM wheel under Turn signal Hiding the 1st TORX bolt--
4: on the underside of the wheel is a little Phillips screw and a panel.Take that off.You will see the SRS Plug(Yellow) and you can unplg it from there,...just be real gentle but its nothing to worry about.
5: on the right side of the wheel is a slightly big plastic that was the Actual HARDEST part of the Swap,..its a BITCH to pop off,..I actually cracked mine a tad pullin so hard,..but under that is the 2nd TORX screw un-do taht 1 and the Front air bag peice will wanna pop off---Pull it off but not all the way cuz you will see how the HORN is plugged in.
6: The wires to the HORN are tucked Really nice behind these "Cleats" so just fish them around them,..and unplug the little harness and you see right where the little tab of the JDM Horn pops in.SO once it all comes out your ready to Remove the wheel.
7: 19mm nut holds the wheel on and you'll see it clear as day( in the middle).
***Now the part(USDM Cable REEL w/ the blck & white SRS logo's on it) that I was told had to be modified/cliped and snpped off( I printed pic's and everything) I couldn't see how to get the REEL off to do it,..I saw 1 screw and un-did it but nothing would move so I said Ta' Hell w/ it. and put the screw back on.

8: There are 2 little pegs wrapped in like Felt or something coming out of the wheel/Blk & white SRS thingy and the JDM wheel as 2 holes opposite of each other that they fit it along w/ the Wheel popping on!
once its on go ahead and plug the SRS plug in(scary part) and make sure you hear it click which it clicks very loudly.
9: the wheel should be ready to be bolted up so tuck everything in there nicely and get to tightning the 19 millie".
10: the you just re-assemble the wheel how the US wheel came off and the 2 torx bolts fit perfectly how the other 1's came off,..so thats about it.
11:Now plug the Negitive back in and I waited another few mins in between,...and now was the MOMENT of TRUTH. I Hopped in teh passenger side and put the key in......and turned it and..................................NOTHING. NO SRS Light no nothing,...horn works and everything--Very easy install,..sounds tough but damn,..I'm not "Mr.HANDYMAN,....just Mr.Fairlady and I did it.

so on first impression,..looks PIMP as ****!!!! feels great @ 9 & 3 in you hands.....def a little smaller and you can notice it.
Now I'm driving around and try the Turn signal,...it turned off by itself and I didn't modify the Rell to make it do that??? CRAZY!
so I guess you don't have to do that after all?? @leats I didn't!!

Take care guys and hope that Helps!!!!! VERY,VERY Simple install.

Here is the funny but true fact in my case.

My steering wheel was off center already from the factory i.e. full opposite lock on either side wasn't "even" and had more turns to the right? That was fixed after putting in an aftermarket steering wheel.

Fuggin' Saturday car.
