Default b18a vs b18b (Short Block Differences )

OK, here is all my questions. I am not sure if I am touching base on anything covered priorly, but I assure you I have searched fro a long time now.
I am curious what all, *every* difference is between the b18a and the b18b short blocks.

From what all I have been told depending on the obd of the short block, there is a sensor going to the water pump area, the oil pump is slightly different, and their is a nock sensor.

These are all very important questions for me because I am ust finishing my build and am thining I want to use the b18b shorty instead. I want the noc sensor the obd1 has to offer, as I am switching to the obdI harness.

Any info you can offer would greatly help.

Also, another reason for my possible change in short block is I amy be moving the engine into a 94+ chassis.

b series non vtec motors do not have knock sensors
and a b18a and b18b have the exact same block. there is no difference at all
the difference between the two motors is in the head. The cams and im is better on a b18b but the two motors are almost exactely the same and the short blocks are exactely the same

I am positive they are not exactly the same, as the water pump cover that shrouds the timing belt as well is different due to a sensor. What is that sensor and why is it there?

Are you sure there is no knock sensor? I was told several times over the past few years that ust what you are saying is correct, not until recently, well atleast the last few months, I have been hearing a lot of people say there is a knock sensor and a sensor near the water pump as well.
I can verify the one near the water pump, but any others I am not sure?

I swapped a 95 B18b into my CRX and I'm sure it had no knock sensor nor any extra sensor at the waterpump. I used all the sensors to run the engine as obdo with 90-91 electricals. Obd2/2.5 may have the knock and extra sensor, I dunno.
I'm sure the obd1 B18b (94-95) doesn't.

I wander what it is I am seeing in the engine bay then? Perhaps I mistook it for a sensor and it is really something else...

obd2 motors have the extra "sensor" at the water pump that you are talking about. i'm too tired at the time to remember exactly what it's for.. i'm sure someone here will know.

no non vtec b motors came with a knock sensor, period.

If you could find out, that would be very helpful. I guess I also need to know if that sensor is something I can use on a b18a short block.

if you are swaping between obd0 from 90-91 to obd1 from 92-95
is basically the same.
and since the compression is low there is no need for a knock sensor.
on the obd2 the crankshaft position sensor is located behind the crank pulley.
but not to worry you could still use it since you have the old crank pulley
and distributor.
the only thing is to place your old engine side by side and swap out or in
things that you need including your mounts..

The extra sensor on obd2 is not at the water pump, it's on the oil pump. It's a CKF sensor that ditects everytime the motor is at TDC.

if I eventually dropped the b18a into a obdII, would I be able to add this sensor?

Gonna try to bring this thread back from the dead,

I'm kinda trying to do the same thing.. i have an obd2 car, and i have an obd2 head, but i have a obd1 b18a block, and i'm wondering if i can use it?

I have internals for a b18b (pistons/rods/bearings) will these work in a b18a block?

And last question, i have ARP headstuds for a b18a block, will those work with the obd2 b18b head?
