Default Oil for B18cR JDM motor?

I have search it TONS. stil haven't found what I was looking for.

I am not a race car driver. I do enjoy spirited driving, going to 8400 every other day.

I am using Mobil 1 5w30 supersyth right now, and I am consuming a bit of oil. I find most people are doing this. I'm thinking of switching over to Castrol Syntec Synthetic. NOT BLEND. I hear that may help wiht the oil consumption. I am however going to stay why 5w30.

What do yo uguys think? Maybe I should just switch over to castrol GTX conventional and change more often? How does 10w30 befit at all? I had 5w30 and 10w30 in my B16a crx and I found the 10w30 made my engien feel slugish.

HELP!

thanks in advance.

JDM B18CR here, and I've used Mobil1 5-30 since the first day. It does tend to burn a bit in the summer and when I'm in VTEC a lot. I may make the switch to Castrol GTX soon to keep costs down.

I used Mobil Synthetic from my R's first oil change and for every change after, that is until I started burning an ever increasing amount of oil (this was a stock motor buy the way). I finally stopped once the burning got bad enough and I was just wasting money, but I'm sorry to say once your oil rings start going changing oils might help a bit but isn't going to stop it all togther. I'm not saying the oil did it but there is a lot of other owners that have had major oil consumption issues while using Mobile I. After I rebuild my engine normal Castrol (or something similar) is all tha will ever touch it.

You could argue for years whether or not it's worth it to buy synthetic. It's up to you to make that decision though.

i had very little to no consumption with quaker state conventional 5w30 while my car was stock. thicker oil may help with consumption, but if you have seals issues, its not going to solve it.

I suggest you do some research... start here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

And then search archived topics in the ITR forum for "oil"

I thought there was very little difference found out after testing oils? For good synthetic oil Amsoil makes some good stuff though.

I've gone over this a few times on this board....I'm almost tired of typing it....

Castrol Syntec is a Group3 based oil....most dinos are in this group. Basically, you are paying synthetic prices for a dino. Castrol got sued by Mobil 1 for this very reason....marketing something as 100% synthetic when it really isn't. As a matter of fact, Castrol GTX tests better than Syntec in a lot of areas. In the end, Castrol got the courts to change the definition of synthetic to fit their crappy oil.

Just for comparison....Mobil 1 supersyn is a Group 4 oil and Amsoil is a Group 5. Like I said, almost all dinos will end up in group 3. If you want to pay synthetic prices for a dino oil, be my guest. It's garbage.

itr 00 0108 who is tired of explaining things to people who don't bother to do research and have to be spoonfed everything...

Even though its not made from a full synthetic base stock does not mean its a poor oil to use. Maybe its overpriced, but thats about it. It started out as a full synthetic, and for a while Castrol was buying their base stock from Mobil. But their refined mineral oil base stock was cheaper, and still met the spec.

And not all of it is Group 3 base.... the German made is a group 4, full synthetic. Can be had at VW and BMW dealers in the heavier weights, or at Autozone in 0W-30.

Royal Purple of castrol synthetic...full synthetic is the only way to go. Royal purple is the best stuff. 5w 30 is a good way to go, wider tolerance for temp and breakdown, doesnt freeze as easy

Is this an opinion or are you basing this on something? I wouldn't let Royal Purple within 100 yards of my c5.

If the oil ring doesn't seal properly, would it ruin the engine?

just add back some oil once a while will be okay, and of coz it won't be run as strong as those engines which the rings seal prefectly
