Will Bad Thermostat Knock Out VTEC activation?
Just replaced b18c into my ef and have no codes, no leaks, and good oil and fuel press. but can not activate VTEC.
The thermostat may be acting squirrely so replaced that tonight - will that knock out VTEC activation?
Trying to figure this one out....
Thanks, all

Normally a low oil pressure situation would be the cause, though if it's not warmed up sufficiently it may not engage VTEC either. Therefore, only a problem in cold weather if the thermostat sticks open and the car can't warm up.

well, i put in the no-no aftermarket Autozone thermostat...i was getting plenty of temperature and have driven the car just over 120 miles
it was not activating BEFORE i changed it but with the snow have not been able to get out of the garage.
it would run up to temp fast and the fan would activate, the antifreeze level correct, but if i kept it at like 5k + rpm for 60 seconds the temp seemed to rise too fast on the stock temp dummy guage
no sign of VTEC that had been there before replacing the shortblock w/ no ECU changes
hmm, any ideas?

Possibly bad VTEC solenoid, or the electrical connection it bad or loose.
Also check your oil level and if possible whether your getting oil pressure to the VTEC solenoid (not sure how you'd actually check it's operation, but I'm sure it's probably in the Helms if you have one).
Best of luck. Ed

but that should kick a code (?)... i have plenty of oil and plenty of oil pressure; i also disassembled the vtec to check the gasket, filter and to see if the "plunger" was stuck, but all was OK on that
if no codes then VTEC should have its power source and the VTEC oil press sensor should be good i think
uggh, frustrated as this one has toda b's and even the first lobe has a lot of power by seat of the pants

Just my .02 worth,
Since you replaced the thermostat. If there is any air in the system and its where the temperature sensor is at the throttle body then the ecu will think the engine is not warmed up, So vtec would not engage.

hmm, good thought but usu. the air works its way out, kina burp and farting its way, but i can not figure out the prob.
i am not too worried yet as i need more miles and may ask Steve Sakai for help if i really get up against it as i am trying for breakin
i will soon be switching to obd 1 & hondata but want to work out the kinks first....
