Anyone know the rule in SCCA for mounting a battery in the trunk?
I recently bought a battery box and an Optima yellow top battery for my car and I wanted to make sure I do it right the first time. I had planned on drilling 2 holes for the battery tie downs, a couple of holes for the battery box tie down straps, and mounting the box in the trunk on the passenger side. Are there any things more specific I need to do? What are the rules in SCCA reguarding a trunk mounted battery?
You can't just say "SCCA". There are many divisions (Solo II autocross, road racing, rally, etc.) and many classes. Some allow relocating, some do not. You need to chose a category and get a rule book to see what is allowed. Don't just move a battery because you got a new one. That is one of the lower end of performance changes if it is allowed. Maybe #30 on the Top 50 list.
I'm sorry. I'll be a little more specific. I plan on running in autocrosses in solo II. I have a heavily modded civic si and I'm close to #30 on the list of things to do. #29 on the list was the roll bar
. Hope this info helps answer my question.

Go and get a copy of the Solo II book and see what class your car best falls in. That will tell what is allowed. It has been a few years since I autocrossed regularly but I beleive the Street Prepared, Prepared and Modified classes allow relocation of the batteries but the Stock, Street Touring and Street Mod do not.
Others here know the specifics better than I. Most will also tell you that if you are newly entering the sport, seat time is much more important than car mod.

Put a lightweight battery in the stock location. Hawker Genesis are plenty light, get them from pegasus racing (i'm sure other places as well).
The extra weight of the battery cables arent worth it.

Just putting a light battery in the stock position next to the firewall is the best solution for weight reduction. Unless of course you have an accord/prelude where its hanging over the front bumper.

'88-91 Civic/CRX have the battery behind the bumper too. '92-00 Civics have them next to the firewall.

You can relocate a battery outside of the passange compartment in Street Touring. As far as the rule goes, It must be in a battery box, the battery must be tied down, and the battery box lid must be fastened securely.
I picked up my Hawker from here.

The lightweight battery is alot less hassle than relocating. Then you don't have to deal w/running wire etc..
