Default AN and NPT fittings

im a curious guy and ive
been reading a little and wondering say when you connect your oil return to the oil pan. what thread is used at the mating NPT right? i know the size says -10AN but isnt the actual thread of the fitting welded onto the pan an NPT size. to my understanding the AN comes only from the JIC standard and the connection that secures the blue/red annodized pieces together and onto the hose.

also the T from the back of the block to the oil feed, theres 1/8 BSPT in the block, 1/8 NPT to oil sending? and whats the third?

The weld on fitting to the oil pan is the actual -10AN JIC fitting,

the bottom part is welded to the oil pan, and the male end will portrude and that's how you screw the hose end to

i know how it goes on, but what is the thread size? i thought the AN was only for the blue/red fitting that secured it to the braided hose?

AN is a pitch and thead size. Similar to NPT. So 10AN is a thread size in itself. Its measured by 1/16" so 10an = 10/16" or 5/8" hose. there is no NPT thread that will go onto the -10an fitting if that's what you're wondering?.

AN is another thread pitch like standard, NPT, metric or BSP..

Different type for different applications

yeap. that's how you can convert it.

10an would be 10/16 and you fraction it down. it would be 5/8"

4an would be 4/16--->2/8--->1/4

but they will not connect to npt threads. AN threads are teh same as flare fitting threads from plumbing store

well, you're both almost right..

The AN is just a number that designate the size of the lines, the thread of AN fittings are measure in JIC standard using 37 deg flare,

-10AN is 5/8" in size and the thread of the fitting is 7/8-14 UNF, again it is measure in JIC..

you would need a -4an to 1/8"NPT adapter!

damn got on this too late, anyway AN , very old kinda outdated standard, very expensive wrenches if you use anodized blue n red fittings and dont want to scratch em.

anyway the Army and Navy (AN) agreed to this standard to simplify Dept of Defense spending, manufacturing to one spec instead of one for each branch of military.

I am still waiting for the new standard I am lobbying for to be adopted by the fittings manufacturers - ANM - army navy metric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pretty sure all you pipe thread/fittings needs are 27tpi. I have all the tables for all the worldwide specs NPT BSPT ....no scanner though
