You should replace the complete axle, not just the boot. Who knows how much grease was lost and how damaged the CV is.

i ripped the boot while replacing the tranny seal so it hasn't got any dirt or gunk in it. The joint is perfect. I'm just wondering if i need special tools to put on the boot straps? How hard is it to get the bootstraps on and off?

There's a special tool to crimp those tight. Looks kinda like a pliers, but a pliers won't work. Maybe AutoZone has them for rent/borrow? But I've even used a pair of nylon wire-ties to replace each clamp, that worked, too.

check out what kind of band you have on the boot. My helms manual shows 3 different types. so some you might be able to get with pliers, and others look like you might need a special tool for

I have been able to remove the old straps using a pair of dikes to grab the end and peel it up, but anyway you can get them off is ok.
The new boot should come with new straps that you put on by hand without special tools. Usually there are a couple tabs to bend down once it is installed. However I have had good luck with nylon cable ties also.
Go ahead, you can do it! Just take your time and enjoy having it done right.
