Motor Smoking After Rebuild? Any Ideas?
okay, just rebuilt a b16a about two weeks ago. jdm sir2 block with usdm b16a2 head. brand new everything in the block and the valves and valve seals were replaced in the head at the machine shop. timing is straight and valves were adjusted. running a ctr intake cam and b16 exhaust cam with i/h/e and fpr. the car has 600 miles on it since the rebuild and it's smoking.
thought it would be normal for a little smoking at first until the seal were broken in and the rings were seated but starting to wonder now cause we've had to add 2 quarts of oil before the 500 mile oil change. i've searched and every thread either says rings or pcv valve. i installed the rings according to the helms manual so that can't be it. if it's not the pcv valve, what else could it be? i'd hate to have to tear down this motor again. someone help me out!

How much smoke? What color? Need just a little more info.
I really hate to say it but i would say rings. I might not be right but thats where I would start.

****, i will need to check the color again. either black or blue, but definitely not white. you can only see the smoke when you accelerate in changing gears and it's not a whole lot. it's not noticable while cruising. why the hell would the rings not seat? i followed it exactly as the helms manual said. used oem rings.
New pistons?
Did you overbore? Did you hone?
Your bore is either really out of whack, there's something wrong with the old pistons (if you reused them), or the rings (whether it be placement or a bore finish issue that never allowed the rings to wear in properly).

used the jdm p30 pistons, which looked to have been in good shape when the block was torn apart. new pr3 rings but no overbore. stock bore. sounds like the problem is where i really don't want it, in the block.

It's not too hard to do if you're not paying attention.
Are you sure you set the end-gap to spec? There's only a few things it could be....

Ok this happened to me when i got my motor back so check to see if it happened ot you.....
I was leaking oil from that little black box on the back of the block..it would leak oil onto the header and start to smoke..so check the bottom of the car..make sure your not leaking oil onto your header..if you are check that box...happened to me so maybe it happneed to you

so you're referring to the oil cooler leaking? i'll have to check again. for some reason the rear main seal busted 2 weeks ago at about 50 miles into the breakin and had to be replaced. i'm wondering if it busted again. any idea why it may bust again?

using regular 10x30 non-synthetic. and yea, stock cat.

that sounds like rings definitely, especially if it is busting the main seal. Are you definitely sure the machineshop honed the block to the proper clearance??if the block is honed to much, the pistons will not let the rings seat corectly.

wait until about 1,000 miles, it shoudl calm down there. I've seen this happen to people when the block is freshly rebuilt. The rings need to seat, and until they do its going to smoke up a bit. Dont be alarmed, this should be normal. But if this happens over 1,000 miles, then i guess it's time to take it all back apart again.
IMO the break-in process shouldnt be a "Babying" period. you should be kind of hard on it a few times, but not more then 4 times a week, and be sure to change oil at least twice within the first thousand miles. after that you should be fine, and on your way.
hope this helps you out.
