My vote would be thermostat as well... And even if it isn't, it's only like $10.... But I was having a similar problem in my LS, replaced it and it's been working ever since...

How cold is it where yoy live? Your problem sounds like a stuck thermostat, just get a new one and check your coolant to see what temp it's good for while you're at it. I've managed to have it freeze on me a few years ago in my old Nissan Bluebird after having a leakage problem during the summer, and beeing lazy refilled with water only and then forgot about it
Then winter came and during christmas it got cold, it was -15 celsius for a couple of days and I found out the hard way my coolant was good for -7 celsius
Engine survived fine, without any problems, as I soon realised why my engine was overheating and the heater not working and got the car inside to deice.
on me for beeing lazy.
