AEM Cold Air Vs. Short Ram
I talked to a mechanic at my local Acura dealer today. He recommended the AEM cold air intake over the short ram, as the short ram sucks up hot engine air, and the cold air intake goes all the way down, past the engine, and is near the bottom of the car. My question is, does anybody who runs this set-up in their car have any problems in the rain? I'm not talking about driving through small lakes, I'm talking about driving through regular heavy rain storms, or hitting the occasional deep puddle that pulls the car a little. Thanks fellas.
I wouldn't put a bypass valve on if I was paid to. Lets see, previous broke apart, got caught in the throttle body and made it stick open. Bad? Yes perhaps!! You literally would have to place that thing in a inch of water for it to make any impact. Rain is not a big deal, the pipe is so long half the time the water evaporates completely. Don't believe the hype.
Have you considered the Comptech Icebox? I put one on my R after having the AEM for a year or so. I've been very pleased with the performance over the AEM. It's a lot smoother with more power throughout the powerband. It's also much quieter which I prefer as well.
I'd recommend the icebox too, i'm very happy with mine, and if you want it to be loud, you just pop off the top of the box and it sounds like a DAC short ram (assuming you have the aluminum tube, which isn't even neccessairy).
I vote for the Icebox too. AEM is popular and sounds cool, but the Icebox really works. I dynoed my car with just the Icebox and timing advance, and got some really good results. So did Aleph, if I am not mistaken.
Aleph - when you take the box cover off, it loses the cold-air effect, and the power, right?

yeah, looses some of the torque, and it's not sealed (cool air may still blow towards the filter, but not much with lens in place, but do it for the noise now and again, it's too amusing at WOT. I did this recently to show a new ITR owner what to expect if he gets a short ram.
I have the cold air intake with the bypass valve, I've been caught in two or three rain storms in which I saw people pull over to the side of the road because it was so bad. I haven't had a problem yet, go for it!
i have a DAC short ram in my gsr and its loud as hell at around 4k+rpm. its nice but if i could go back i think i woulda got the aem but its still a good choice u can always go back to short ram if u get the cold air extension for it
