ok here is the deal.

B18B......rebuild a few months ago. Shotpeened rods, Arais 10.5:1 pistons, fully machined.......running Crane cams for only about a month or two.

Lately he has noticed excessive amount of missing oil, he was missing a WHOLE QUART !....hmmmmmm thats bad. He changes his oil very frequently. Checks the plugs, covered in oil.

also another thing that might/might not be related.... noticed the other night at high RPM ( when he was trying to follow while i dusted a GST hehehe) ..... a strange pinging/clanking sounds......i have not heard it, but he does not think its detonation. He is running factory ignition timing.......also there is oil smells out of exhaust.......any ideas ????

do compression and leak down tests........sounds like some bad rings maybe?

 

will definately check the rings.

any other possibilities

 

sounds like rings + detonation. check the rings, and retard the ignition timing 4 degrees or so and see if it continues to detonate.. also check the plugs for signs of detonation.

 

what are signs of detonation on the plugs ?
