a few questions...
after a rather rude awakening to the fact that I seem to be wired for driving a wrong-wheel drive car in autox, ive decided to sell my miata and get a civic. im thinking an EG hatch, as those seem to do reasonably well in the right hands and can still be found in unmolested shape. the question is, which one do i get? EX or SI? is the SI competetive in stock classes? where does it go?
what are the gearing differences? i know the SI has a vtec, so it probably has shorter gearing, but how big a difference is it?
finally, what is the popular suspension set up for running stock? SP?
thanks for answering my probably dumb questions, but i know absolutely nothing about setting up a honda for autox.

ok, im a lil confused... from what im reading, the SI model goes into CSP, while the DX ends up in FSP.
but integras and preludes go to DSP? why's the little old SI get screwed so bad?
guess i really need to pull out the old GCR and read up on some stuff...

all EF chassis civics are CSP
EG Si's are DSP, EG DX's are FSP
if you run an EG Si you'll be out gunned by the more powerfull honda's and teh almighty Bimmer in DSP. I think the EG Si can still compete with the Mini's in HS, and they could also do some damage in STS

a few random data points:
kugler's DX EG (FSP nats winner) ran a time on the south course that would've been 4th in DSP (on that one course. FSP ran in the rain on the north course and as such comparisons are a little skewed)
his car (according to him) weighs "around 2000lbs". my guess is that it's probably right around 2030lbs, sans driver.
my car (93 ex coupe, goes to DSP) weighs 2250 in STS trim. it can _easily_ get down another 75lbs in DSP, maybe more. take another 30-40lbs off for the SI.
with a 23" tire, the SI/EX model has better gearing then the DX on 21" tires.
the SI/EX models have more hp and torque then the d15. of course, this is offset by the added weight.
and the final data point. kugler's car can go faster. watching him on the south course he was left foot braking into/through the fast lane change. my car was accelerating faster up till then (flat footed the first left hander) and didn't require any lift or brake through the lane change. i was literally floored all the way to the first 180* turn. my guess was that kugler was sandbagging. i would not be surprised to see the dx moved to dsp with the vtec cars. however, i don't think we'll be seeing them on the same line for at least another 5 yrs.

so it looks like a good progression would be an SI in HS till i get comfortable with the car, then run STS with some mods, and finally take the plunge and go DSP
although the SI is heavier, i kind of like the features it has over a DX. this *is* gonna be a daily driver...

haha... you want to find a stock Si hatch... hahahahaha.... thats funny.....
as karl says, "good luck with that"
(no i'm not kidding and you should take that as a warning)

I'm not so sure about the other Hondas. The same wheel and tire package on a 500 lb lighter and smaller chassis has got to have some advantages, even if they can't make as much power.
Also, FSP, traditionally, has been FASTER than DSP. Like 98 through '02 were like that. ('01 doesn't count, due to 9/11)

There's still a few around RJ. I passed one one just the other week with under 100K on it for $3750. She was asking EXACTLY KBB of the car in "fair" condition.
I passed, only because I didn't feel like going to OKC to get it. My guess is that it won't be stock for long though...

I thought FSP was a newer class than that?
As far as the DX, remember that Allen does a really thorough prep job when he sets up a car. I'd be surprised if there is another in the country preped to the level he does. It does show the potential of a lighter car versus heavier, more powerful ones though.

bringing this back from the dead for an update
assuming the dealer doesnt try something shady, ill be getting an *almost* stock '93 SI. one owner, supposedly driven by the proverbial old lady. purchased and traded in at the same dealer. its got about 90k miles, and burns oil at WOT. this may be ring wear, or due to teh car not being driven much in teh past few years. only time will tell on that one.
the dealer installed some decent looking bronze 15s, but the offset isnt right, so the tires rub on the rear coils. the dealer is keeping 'em. they also put one of those carbon fiber roof spoilers on the car... that will be sold/traded for a stock one
oh yea, and a 'muller honda racing' windsheild sticker
thats the first thing to come off...
but anyways, looks like ill be saving up for some konis and kuhmos to run HS while i figure out what is a good set-up for DSP. just thought i should post this, as there's some doubt as to whether or not a stock SI in good shape can be found

have you ever seen sam harnish's car? sam definetly has the high $$$ set-up over kugler.
