Default Why is my clutch release bearing bad at 73,000 miles?

When I depress the clutch, it squeaks, and I had a friend depress the clutch while I listened to the transaxle, and it's definitaly coming from there. I'm 99% sure its the release bearing. Could it be anything else? And why has it gone bad at such low milage? And can the transaxle be pulled without droping the entire engine?

(I knew I shouldn't have let my girlfriend learn how to drive a manual on my car!)

It could also be the springs in the clutch plate it self. Sometimes the metal tabs get wore away by the springs that sit in the plate
