Default Vtec Bogging

'97 GSR
My Check engine light came on a week ago. Shortly after my Vtec Bogged when it was supposed to kick in at 6. Did it in 2nd and 3rd. Oil was real low. Added oil and coolant. Now it runs fine. Vtec works, all smooth. Still need to take it in. Does this sound common?
Hope so.
Thanks.

Yeah it happens to the best of us, lol. You need a certain amount of oil pressure to open the VTEC solenoid, and when there is a lack of O/P, it won't kick in or it will stutter when trying to engage. It may or may not throw a CEL... it's happened to me a couple times and I usually don't get a CEL. Your car was probably running in limp mode, it sets the rev limiter around 6k and VTEC will NOT engage whatsoever. Your car will be fine, just check your oil frequently- I got lazy and now my engine is fawked for doing so.

Did you check the code? I assume it was probably a 22...Your situation is easily explained...however...you might be burning some oil if you got THAT low that VTEC was manipulated.

That would be my concern....not really the VTEC system.
