Default any advice on removing crank pulley to remove timing belt?

i tried using an impact gun but that didn't work. but, i am using a shitty impact gun. so, i'm thinking of renting a crank pulley holder if they have one available for rent at kragen or any other general auto parts store and taking that **** off manually. does anyone know if they do rent them out at these places?

any tips or tricks. thanks.

The motor is obviously still in the car, correct? If so, you should be able to push two screwdrivers or metal dowels through the holes in the crank pulley and position them under the block area to hold the crank pulley still. Get yourself a good half inch impact socket, long extension and half inch breaker bar. If you can't get it loose with just the breaker bar, slide a piece of pipe over the bar to increase leverage.

I have a 600 ft lb craftsman pro impact gun that doesn't take everything off. I still use the good 'ole breaker bar for many tasks. Holding the screwdrivers in the correct spot to keep the crank pulley still is by far the most difficult task here. (It will probably cost you two screwdrivers) You may want to borrow or purchase a better impact gun for the future though.

I used a technique suggested by another member of this board...

1. Put the tranny in 5th gear and have someone STAND on the brakes (they'll really need to stomp hard!)

2. Use a giant breaker bar to break loose the nut

You might lose some knuckle skin but it works great!

That trick has never failed me.

thanks for all the advice. it is much appreciated.

third shift org: which holes are you referring to on the crank? are the on the bottom of the crank pulley?

and for standing on the brakes with the car on fifth gear, i was told to do that as well but, i'm going to put on a set of new powerslot rotors and project mu brake pads and i just put in my new act clutch. so, not knowing how it will adversely effect these parts, i don't want to take the chance.

or, do what I did and buy the special tool from ontool.
jack up the car and position the tool to hold the pulley still so it hits the ground behind the engine. then use your breaker bar angled so it comes out just under the radiator and stomp on it. piece of cake that way and its the best way to ensure nothing strips or slips.

Now, does anyone have a good method of holding cam gears still to tighten them down???
