I have a chance to buy a B18B OR B16
These 2 engines are complete but they dont have trannys
B18B (1996 LS) $350 (boost)
B16A (JDM SIR1) $600 (can a hydro tranny bolt up?)
I have about $1900 to spend, and my friends can help me rebuild either engine. Its going to go into a 1994 civic cx with a d16z6 (wired for vtec). I might boost the b16 later down the road, but the b18b if I do buy I want it to be boosted when I put it in.
What should I do?

um, ask yourself this, which one do you prefer?
you said your gonna boost the b16 later.
BTW, yes itll bolt up.
dont ask other people what you SHOULD want and whats preferred over what. Everybody has there own tastes and whatnot.
Me, I prefer the b18b.

with either engine u will have to buy a trans/ecu/wireing harness. imo, u have two options. u could prob get an entire swap b16 for aroud 1500.00, or u could put that 1900 into your sohc and have a motor thats built and ready for anything as well as a motor with good power. just my 2 cents.
i was just givin u my opinnion. i am currently buliding my z6 w/pistons/rods/valves/springs/cam/retainers/and maybe intake plus all of the machining for 1700-1800$$$. u said that u had a friend who could help do rebuilds.
in my eyes this build is better than a swap, but agian that is just my 2 cents.

Buy the b18b.. and also buy a b16a motor/tranny/ecu... and build up the b18 slowly.. and then when thats done drop that in and turbo it
you should have enough money for that..

1900 to spend isnt going to get you a very good or reliable turbo set-up and a b18b.
id say honestly that for 1900 you could have a pretty nice single cam vtec turbo set-up.
i ended up spending about 4k said done deal for my b18c1 swap with all the maintnence and bolt-ons. all done by my self. and i got beat up at the dragstrip by a sohc vtec turbo. he had all stock internals also. he was running mid 13's to my low 14's
so if you just want to be fast, the sohc would be the easiest to get there for the least money. if you plan to roadrace or autox, go with a b18 with b16 tranny.

Agreed. Don't go from 1.6L of SOHC fury to 1.6L of DOHC fury: I've been there and it's not worth it unless you're boosting, and even then, the B18B will do better.

If i had the choice i'd prefer boosting a B16 over a B18B anyday.
The best argument everybody comes up with is "the B18a/b has lower compression". Give me a break. It's called tuning people. Look into it...
