Default hmotors.... b18b or b20b or b20z?

I blew my rings on my b18b and im going to hmotors to pick up an engine on the 21(thats when they get new stock of b20z's)

B20b, 126hp, 126tq......$550
B20z, 146hp, 133tq.....$750
B18b, 145hp, 127tq......$700
or maybe even an
obd1 b16, 170hp, 113tq...$1100

Please give me advice on which engine you recommend for the money, consider its going into 2000 ek hatch.
And im aiming for low boost in 2011.

Someone chime in with experiience with the thin cylinder walls on the b20z.
Is it worth the extra 50bucks for extra 6lbs tq over the LS?

Also.... what do i need to run an obd1 b16 in my hatch?

Does my current b18b dizzy/alternator/ etc work with the b16?
Or should i use the one that comes on the b16(if i get it)

I would go b16a yeah not as tourqy but you cant go wrong with 9k rpms. besides its an easy swap into your ek. all you need is mounts vtec wirring and vtec dizzy everything else works fine. im rockin a 96 ex with 99 front end obd1 b16a and ls tranny and i smash on my boys b18b ek i would go b16a for sure

It doesn't rev that high. And what's so good about 9000 rpm?

Do you have an extra $ 300 for a tuned ecu ? , The b20z Is the best option, just remember they work best with a tuned/chipped ecu.

IF you dont want to spendt he extra $$ then the B18b is also great.

My recomendation is. Get the b20z, get a good header and intake , exhaust and then get the ECU chipped and tuned.

If your on budget the VAFC will work pretty good adding fuel with the stock B18b computer you have.

Thanks for the input fellas.

I was ALREADY leaning towards the b20z looks like you guys like it better too, so far.

Now can anyone input anything about the cylinder walls conpared to a b18b?
Like,is the b20 easier to blow than a b18?
Can the b18 rev higher safer?

Thanks

B16's aren't that bad. I made 154whp with just full exhaust, intake, and ctr cams before I turbo'd it. But torque is what the b16 lacks. If I were you I would do the b20z and put a VTEC head on it.

If you are aiming low boost, a B20Z will work out great.

Best bang for the bucks is no doubt a B20Z or slap a B16A/18C head while you are at it.

People say B20's are easier to be blown because they have smaller bore sizes, which if you are going high boost + a big turbo, you'd better build that bottom end.

I as a previous owner of all those engines, the B20Z any day, it is under rated and makes even mor than the advertized power. It will also easily out perform a B16A stock for stock!

I think you ment to say, as they have a 84mm bore vs the b18bs 81mm they have thinner Cylender walls.

Wich they do.

But blowing the B20 isnt any easier than the b18b. Only problem is if your passing the stock rev limit of 6200 the b20 has. if you run it with the b18b ecu it can run lean in the extra added rpm.

^^^ youre right, i forgot he b20z makes 146hp, n 133tq with the tall giraffe manifold.
It should make more since i have to put on my LS manifold, right?

So you guys are saying i can take the b20 to 7grand once or twice a week without blowing it?

the b18b can rev higher than the b20 yes. just keep the b20z at stock redline and you will be fine.. i took mine to 7k with no problems at all.

basic mods like i/h/e chipped ecu, gsr tranny with light weight flywheel will pull pretty good imo.

So what rpm can i regularly take the b20 to?
Well not regularly more like weekend races? 6200? 6900?

Will anything bad happen if i use the p75 ecu on it?

stock ecu keep it at 6500-6700 rpm, chipped ecu u can take it to 7k no problem.

and for ur question about buying from hmotors... steve is the only person who i get my motors from period! all clean and super healthy motors. ive had my swap for 2 yrs and beat on it like hell and it doesnt burn a drop of oil and still has 220 across the board.

if anything comes broken or doesnt work with ur swap he will take care of u no doubt.

I agree... Steve helped me source info. on a certain VSS when I found out my tranny had an aftermarket LSD in it. Very willing to help and inform... and doesn't seem like an egotistical dick like some people you deal w/ in the automotive industry... Highly recommended... The next engine I get will be from him.... possibly a B20Z like yourself....

Alright guys that really helped me out.

Now i will def be putting in a new oil/water pump n belt.
And new clutch/possibly new flywheel.

What do you guys recommend as far as clutch and flywheel.
Exedy,XTC, or any other options
What weight do u recommend for dd weekend warrior ( i heard too light of a flywheel will kill the b20's torque)

And im guessing youre ALL going to recommend vtec oil n water pumps?
