Default Why bother with ITR or CTR cams when you have cam gears?

The other day when I was looking at the cam spec for ITR and CTR motor (which are popular swaps into B16a's and B18c's I came upon a predicament. Since CTR cams open the intake valves sooner than Si cams and others, and that seems to be the only real difference, couldn't you just buy adjustable cam gears and use them with stock B16a cams, simply advancing the intake and retarding the exhaust cam to achieve the same results as using CTR or ITR cams? Make ya think...

uuum because if you know anything about cams or engines in general, you will know that in order to gain power you need more duration and lift per amount of degrees or crankshaft rotation. an engine is a big lung....the more you can get un for given volume the more poer you will make. CTR and ITR cams have more over stock B16A cams.......and only a dyno should be used to adjust cam gears.........

ITR

INTAKE lift - 11.5 mm, duration - 240 @ 1mm
EXHAUST lift - 10.5 mm, duration - 235 @ 1mm

CTR

INTAKE lift - 11.5mm, duration - 243 @ 1mm
EXHAUST lift - 10.5 mm, duration - 235 @ 1mm

The B16 cam specs I've seen are 10.1 or 10.6mm lift for the intake, and 9.0mm or 9.4mm for the exhaust.

Looking at the ITR vs CTR, they appear to have the same exhaust cam fromt he numbers, don't know if the profile is different, though.

The intake cam has 3 extra degrees duration on the CTR.

Adding an adjustable cam gear won't change the duration, only the timing when it opens.

Alright *** ...it was an honest question. The more I thought about it the more I remembered about lift and duration. Thanks for being a complete dick about it.

Are you shitting me? He answered the question at hand better than 95% of the people on this site and was quite un-offensive about it. Grow some thicker skin, people: this is Honda-Tech, not Momma-Loves-You-Tech.

And, yes, lift coupled with duration is what makes the majority of useable power.

If you want to forgo the cams, consider a valve job. Improving the flow at the valve openings=more flow at partial opening.

Looked like a reasonable reply to me based on the question asked. A simple response to a basic question. If the response was dumbed down too much, maybe the question needed to be smartened up.

Note that none of this addresses the short, low speed lobes. How do they compare? It's rather difficult to spend all your time above 6K so comparison of the low speed parts of the cams would seem to matter too.

HOLY ****...all I did was ask a simple question, got a little ticked at the response, and then called a '***** noob'. I'm really sorry I ever had to have any desire to understand anything about automobiles. I'm not offended, nor did i take any comments to heart...I'm am impressed however at how many goddamn people can rant and rave about how they hate those '***** noobs'. I should have remembered about how LudeyKrus was shat out of his mom's *** knowing every cam lobe spec from CTR to ITR to Jun to Toda, and whatnot. I now bow down to you oh great deliverer of knowledge. Geesh, get a life.

yep...thanks for shopping Honda-Tech, Have a great day!

FYI, I know very little about cam specs, i just was amused by your attitude towards a simple response.
