Bbasso's thread got me thinking that my input shaft bearing. My tranny has been making a rock rolling around in a can sound now for a while. It is only noticeable right now in neutral with clutch engaged. Press the clutch in and the sound goes away
. I was thinking it was my throwout bearing, but then someone brought to my attention that the bearing isn't doing squat when my foot is off the pedal so if anything it would START making the sound when I pressed the pedal, which of course makes since.
1. How much cost in parts am I looking at? This is the most important question.
2. I'll do the work myself. Anything difficult about it?
3. Any H-T guys in the AL area want to give me hand when I attempt it. I can't buy beer yet, but I'll sure pay for it.
4. I'm still driving the car right now, still shifts fine, maybe a little notchy. What is the worst thing that can happen? Any mini nuclear explosions possible in my tranny case that i need to be aware of?

D just replaced his look for his thred.....
Mine are going bad also. Hope nothing bad happens before I open the case.

Usually the input shaft bearing makes noise rolling in gear under a load. Your problem is more likely a throw-out bearing. Mine makes a squeak until I push in the clutch-it's definitely the throw-out bearing on my car. Parts for input bearing replacement are not much. Bearing, seal, and HondaBond. When the input shaft bearing goes out, if the car is driven a lot of miles, the bearing can take out the input shaft seal and you may run low on MTF. Then bad things can happen.
I spent 400 to replace the throwout bearing and It was not the problem
My advise, if your under warranty- take it to the dealer and get it for free.
If not, do it yourself- just besure to inspect everything for damage.
Edit: 400 was for other things too but still 400 when all said and done.

If it was my throwout bearing shouldn't it make the sound only when I press the pedal in? When I'm just sitting in neutral with clutch engaged the release bearing is just chilling out not spinning correct? I'll listen to the car carefully today under load and see if I notice anything.
Going to search for D's thread now.

I recently replaced mine too. Pulled the box myself and had a local shop replace the bearings for me and inspect everything else. $120 in parts, $120 in labor.
Probalby could have done the repairs myself, but for only $120, the insurance it was going to be put back together right (saving me from pulling the tranny again) was well worth it.

When your foot is not on the clutch, the throw-out bearing is resting slightly on the fingers of the pressure plate. It can make a noise at that point. When you push the clutch in, the throw-out bearing is loaded against the pressure plate. In the case of my noise, it goes away when the throw-out bearing is under a load. Without hearing your noise, I could not tell you for sure what it is. I have heard and repaired many bad input shaft bearings on older Civics-only had one Integra with a bad input shaft bearing. I just wanted to let you know that it is possible that the throw-out bearing could be the source of your noise. It may be something else entirely ; the only way to find out for sure is to pull the tranny...

My R recently has encountered a similar problem where a distinct 'whine' is heard when im rolling in gear, BUT once i clutch-in the sound comes to a complete halt. Now I've heard the contrary where if one clutches IN and the sound decipates that its ACTUALLY the input shaft as opposed to the throw-out bearing.
Any myth busters out there ?

noise with clutch pedal out = input shaft bearing (replaced mine)
noise with clutch pedal in = throwout bearing
noise with clutch pedal in = throwout bearing
Right, since the TO is only in use when the clutch is depressed.
At the same time a common problem when it is indeed the input shaft is rattling when the car is in neutral regardless of the clutchs position which I havnt encountered at all (isnt the input shaft still turning even in neutral with the clutch up?)

You do realize this thread was first created in 2003 ?
Although you seem to be a stand up guy
My apologies for giving life into this ancient thread. But since inputing the words "input shaft" into the search engine produced this sole result I thought it would be a good idea to finally put away some common fallacies on the issue.

Got a link to that one?
I know this is old... but want to read it.

Same problem here, except it's not just noise with the clutch pedal released, the engine stalls!
I pulled the tranny, and the pressure plate, disk, and flywheel look fine, although there was smoke coming out of the flywheel cover after the engine stalls. I reused the clutch with a different flywheel, but resurfaced the flywheel before installing it. Pilot bearing looks ok too.

Sounds like a really common problem.</TD></TR></TABLE>
If its bad, I'd recommend getting it fixed. My input shaft bearing came apart and all the ***** went floating throughout the tranny. Ended up busting my mainshaft and final drive gear

Aww crap, I thought the assembly was relatively contained.
It's literally been thousands of miles without a problem. It probably will be summer till I can pull the thing apart (would love to throw an ATS 2-3-4 gearset on there while I'm doing it).
