Input shaft bearing is more than likely the cause - if its just whirring. If you start to get a grind accompanied with that whirring, thats more than likely the bearing at the opposite end of the same shaft.
You'll need to drop the tranny in order to replace this bearing.
There are a few threads around here concerning this topic as it seems a common failure on D-trannys.

THANKS FOR THE HELP. THE SWAP IS COMING IN FEBUARY. I JUST HOPE THE TRANNY WIIL HOLD TILL THEN

I put over 10k miles easily on the tranny while the bearing was just whining but when the grinding started, it sounded like the thing was going to grenade. I'll dig up a picture to show the damage....

I just completed my z6 tranny tonight on the kitchen counter(its so cold outside!)
not to hard to do just follow bauleys notes ,hell I printed the whole thread and looked through it while working. thanx bauley!
