Fuel Grade: Does it matter?
1996 Honda Accord LX (2.2L non-vtec) Automatic.
I have been using 87 octane forever.
I have been told that if I use 91 octane (the highest available pump where i live) it will not make a difference and I will be wasting money, if not getting poorer fuel economy.
Is this true?
with mods-cai, cat-back exhaust, is this still true?
kk

Absolutely true.
Your engine is made for 87, and since higher octane gas resists more to explosion, it might lower your performance.
I have found my times at the track to be slightly better with 87 than with 91 octane on my 95 EX.
Same should go for you. High octane is for high compression.

no, it does hurt, first of all, there's a "quich" area, 93 is harder to burn completely and it burn slow, the leftover of the unburn gasoline over a long period of time will become carbon deposit, the black tar like sh-t on the piston surface, which in some case, it will overheat and start a flame front and cause denoation.
i dont know how much you guy paying for gas but I am broke and i want the 87

the higher the rating the more resistance to start burning, the other word you need hotter spark to start the fire, it will resist to pre. ignition which happen alot with cheap gas from mexico or some place(those gas place with no rating, just plain GAS
)
there's people been using 91(equal to 93 for non-cali residents) from day one and the car is addict/adjuste to the higher rating of fuel, over a long period of time and mileage, the car cannot run smoothly or as good without the higher octane fuel.
it just not nessccary, unless you using nitrous, turbo, sc or high compression NA built motor
and about the myth of power, high octane race gas like 105 will give you some noticeable horsepower, but emission will suffer so it's not idel for everyday pump gas operation, unless you live in middle of no where.

here another concept, with the overheac cam engine design, the spark plug are sitting in the middle(not exactly right 100% in the middle but it's dame close), in the power stoke the sparkplug will give a spark, and the flame will start from the center of the chamber and spread out to the cylinder wall, here the problem, the temperture of the whole combustion chamber is not all equal, the temp. near the cylinderwall is cooler(metal take away heat and waterjacket, etc) which take away the heat nessarsy to make a complete/clean/all combustion of all the gasoline, some might say, who cares i got moola, but the problem is the unburn gasoline will leave deposit over time.
87 octane for any f-series motor found in the accord, unless you got major engine work done. anything with higher octane is just a waste of money, and as someone has already mentioned, will lower performance and gas mileage.

The only time you upgrade on fuel is when you are experiencing pinging with the curent fuel grade or if you are running forced induction, nitrous or some serious motor work (like high compression pistons).
only in high compression or forced induced motors (or highly advanced timing wise) will you ever need to run 92. It ahs nothing to do with performance, it just has to do with how hard it is to combust.

don't know if this is true, but the new 03+ v6's can make more hp with higher octane. the engine is designed to make 240 hp with 87 octane, but if you put in higher octane, the timing is advanced and you get more hp. anyone here about this?
