metal flap covering hole going to fuel tank gone?!?
When I went to fuel up today, I noticed that the metal flap that covers the hole going into the fuel tank is gone!!! Anyone ever have this happen??
I didn't notice it when I took off my fuel cap to start fueling cause I didn't check, but when I was done, pulled out the gas gun, and noticed a black hole instead of that little metal flap that usually covers the hole.
Will this in anyway affect my car? I did drive it home, and didn't notice anything different. I'm starting to get worried now cause that little flap might be sitting in the tas tank. Help!

Seems to me that one of the functions of that flap is to help prevent gas from sloshing up the pipe and out of the car when cornering on a full tank.
I'd assume that the gas cap would help prevent any serious spillage. Probably a good idea to get it replaced sooner than later.

don't worry about it. If you ever get a chance to look inside your tank (I did when I replaced the fuel filter), the pickup is contained within a little chamber. Within the closed off chamber, there is a net surround the pickup assembly that acts as a filter, not even a tiny pebble can pass that. So, don't worry about it.
The only concern you should have is if you overfill the tank when filling up. On older systems, the trap door helped aid the nozzle at gas stations to sense when the tank was full to stop the pump. On newer systems, the trap door is not necessary as the design is different. Overall, don't worry...be happy!

I asked at my dealer's service department when I saw that my '01 didn't have one and they said they eliminated that metal flap a couple of years ago. They keep having to tell people that no, they did not lose the flap, and no, it did not fall down inside their gas tank.

oops, sorry for the mistake
I guess I must've been recalling my family's Legend gas tank. I actually asked a couple other friends that drive Integras, and they don't have it either. Guess I just never noticed it before.
figment: thanks for the pic, you've put my mind at ease...
