Default Melted plugs are good right?

Well for those of you that don't know the R has been running around with a little AF ratio problem since I pulled the head and had it reworked and stiffer V springs installed. It has a pretty bad lean spike around 6,000rpms, but other than that the AF is decent. Because of this I've been really easy on it, just waiting for a job so I can get better tuning devices (hondata).

Anyway last night I said screw it and decided to run through the gears one time. I fired it 1st-4th and it pulled strong, hit 5th gear and it pulled to 130mph and just stopped :? , for those of you that have been with me you know that I could hit the rev limiter in 5th gear (155mph) so something was major wrong. Not only did it stop at 130mph it started backing down to 125mph and I quickly let off.

I drove the rest of the way home and it actually seemed to be running decently and strangely enough accelerated really well at low rpm. The reason this was strange is because today I checked my spark plugs and they are all pretty much destroyed  . I don't mean fouled out, I'm talking about melted electrode tips and cracked insulators on some of them. How it ran home fine I don't know. Definitley some preignition going on.

Now I started worring out it from being lean but then I thought back to the dyno and on my first runs it was the leanest it has ever been, and after a 10-12 runs the car didn't have any of the symptoms now (plugs were still intact).

I had similar problems before when my distributor crapped out. I've actually had my plugs worse then this, but it was something that got progressively worse, but that was back at 30k mi and I was still getting on it all the time so it was noticeable. Maybe since I've been slugging around the distributor has been bad but not noticeable since I haven't been running it up to high rpm? Any input?

You went back to the dyno on those same plugs???

what are you using to control fuel and what is your timing set at?

No, no I was talking about a while back when I dynoed. I was trying to say if the car running lean was the cause of the problem I figured it would have happened then.

This just happened last night and the car is currently sitting without plugs. Timing was set at 17 degrees last time at the dyno. Fuel control is via FPR and VAFC, neither of which could trim out the lean spike without maxing out the fuel system, which has me confused still.

It sounds like some upgraded injectors should be on your near-future "to-do" list.
