Need some help picking a home theater reciever
title says it all. looking for separate components though (preamp and amps)
i would prefer a big 2Ch amp for the fronts, and smaller 3ch amp for center/surrounds
budget is approx $6000cdn.

Well here is my vote.
B&K
a. Its damn near bulletproof.
b. It will never become obsolete...if any new sound design comes along
it can be upgraded( ie DTS ES, Dolby II ES 7.2 etc)
c. Its made in the USA....a least you can rest easy knowing some
worker will benefit from the purchase.
thats my .02

Depends what you are looking for.
Consumer reports has a review of home theater Speakers, Recievers, and "In a Box" setups this month. While they don't cater to audiophiles, I don't think my ears could qualify as high-precision audio devices.
Don't buy RCA. I did 2 years ago, One of the "theaters in a box". Turned out the reciever is crap. Display has gone bad, output is unclear in upper volume levels, and the input sare limited.
I think you get more input/output options if you buy your reciever separate from the rest of the system. Just an observation.

Umm...look at the sig and look at the budget.... i dont think i would ever consider RCA to power my stuff. My sony goes into protect mode after about 30 minutes of high volume listening
I am buying my reciever separate from the rest of my system. I'm actually looking to buy my amps separate from the processor.
what i've been looking at so far was the Arcam FMJ A32 processor and the P35 power amp or the rotel RSP-1098 and the RB-1080 with a smaller 3channel amp for the surrounds and center.

I'm using the Sony STR-DE485 in my bedroom with full surround... But As soon as my new place gets built, I'll go upto the Sony 995. 770watts with 7.1 capabilities. I've had the Sony for about a year now problem free and sounds fantastic.

lol...i have a digital coax cable that costs almost as much as the 995. that 995 is very similar to what i have now but i mine is only 5.1. What speakers are you using it to power?
i put a digital thermometer on my receiver last night and at volume 30 it operates at a consistant temp of around 170°F. personally i've never been satisfied with the performance of any of the sony products that i've owned with the exception of my near $800 DVD player. Ive heard the same setup as mine with an arcam A32 and it made the speakers disappear and really brought the image to life.

Believe it or not... I'm using Jensen cubes about the size of Bose cubes. Since I don't have any other space now. I'm looking into getting some in-wall units from a friend that works in the home theater business. and go from there.

interesting...i'm running a pair of B&W CDM 9nt's (soon to be nautilus 802's) which require and can handle a little more power than the jensens. i dont think anything sony makes suits my needs.

Lexicon MC-8 for the preamp/processor.
Bryston 4B SST (300 x 2)
Bryston 6B SST (300 x 3)
The Classe CAV-500 is a beast too (250 x 5).
Another alternative is to go with a 6-channel preamp (McCormack MAP-1 or Bel Canto Pre6) instead of a pre/pro. Most high-end DVD players have decoders that are just as good as the ones in processors. The 6-channel preamps also allow you run both SACD and DVD-Audio. I'm considering going with the McCormack MAP-1 and the DNA-HT5 (only 125 x 5).

I can see where you running B&W's may not feel fulfilled with the Sony... Look into Meridian, it'll set you back a year's pay, but you'll have it then. My last amp before the Sony was a 30 y/o tube driven Sansui with only 65watts per channel that powered my Bose 201's, I was in heaven then. I'm just going to a car audio mentality with this... use smaller speakers to play the mids and highs and a powered sub for the bass. The thing I like about the Sony is the ease of use and setting adjustablity. I can tell it what type of speaker I'm using, height from the floor, and distance from the center seating point to give the best imaging possible for movies. Until I move in, I won't consider replacing the speakers, the fronts with towers and the rear with in-wall units for surround. My neighbors will either hate me or love me.
I just like simple and I also believe in matching components, but when money plays a factor... I'll listen to "ok sound" until I can get the toys I want.

Arrogant. Asking for help only to trash the people offering it, how shallow.
I'm sorry I didn't notice your budget.
I'll notify everyone here, so that you can be treated with the respect you think you deserve.

I really don't worry about it... I only make $60k a year and hang around people that make me look like a street vendor. To each his own. Let's not turn this into a flaming thread. please. I make all my coax cable out of RG-6 and solder on the RCA tips.... I just use what works and do they same thing that's offered to guy who just spent $500,000 on a home theater room.

i'm not tryiing to come accross as being arrogant but unfortunately nobody has actually offered me any help. i clearly stated in my original post that i was looking for separate components, not an in-a-box system or a complete reciever.
HondaDriver4Life's post happened to be a very good one and is exactly waht i was looking for so i'm not going to "trash" him as you say. i'm going to look into those sometime this week. I think the 300x3 may be a little too much for the center and surrounds but i think the 2ch amp might do the trick for the fronts.

EBP_SI, you have the wrong setup. There is no way for us to fix your mistake. Send it to me, and I can recommend an alternate one
What about crown amps? They seem to be very solid, have lots of power and be in your price range. 3 k1's
would meet your needs.
