Yesterday I was pushing my civic on the hightway going 100mph with 4 gear. But right before I hit 100mph my engine light came on. Is the engine light a big major problem? What could wrong with my car?
There is one thing I was thinking causing the light to come on is my Field VTEC and FUEL controller but not too sure about it. I set my VTEC to kick in at 5200 rpm and my fuel setting is at -2 for 1000rpm to 3000rpm and -1 for 4000rpm and 0 from 5000rpm to 7000rpm. I was think since I was hitting vtec with 4 gear do you think my car is running too lean (because I set it at 0 from 5000 rpm to 7000rpm) thats why engine light came on?

Here is my list of mods AEM cai, Greddy Header, HKS cat-back, MSD ignition with external ss coil and Field VTEC and FUEL controll.

 

You popped a code, now you have find out which one.

under the passenger side of dash is your ecu...look for a blue two prong connector that is not attatched to anything...jump the two connectors together w/ a paperclip, turn ignition to ON, and check how many times it blinks, after you pull the code, let us know what it was, so we can help.

1)Key in Ignition ON Engine Check come on then goes off
2)First blink is long, Second blink is little shorter, Third blink is even shorter and Forth blink is very fast blink.
3)Then the SRS blinks two times
4)Then the Engine check lights repeat 2)

Does this mean its four blinks?
I just checked the manual if its four blinks is
1)Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction (-Crankshaft Position Sensor or -Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit or - ECM/PCM)
or
2)Crankshaft Position Sensor Range/Performance (-Crankshaft Position Sensor or -Timing belt skipped teeth)

Here is so fact about my 97 CIVIC EX its only has 21k miles on it.

the way it works is....the long flash will indicate the 1st digit in a 2 digit number, and the subsequent quick flashes represent the 2nd digit...for instance
one long flash, followed by three short flashes would be a code 13...

I doulbt it's a code 13 on your car because that one is really rare...there should only be 2 speeds of flashes, fast, and slow.

if there is a long pause in between flashes, it indicates that there is more than one code present.

check it again, if you are certain it's a code 13, that is for barametric pressure, and I'm not sure how to fix that one...but you should double check it.

 

Just want to add this too (if it's worth anything).

On the G6 Civic there is a problem with the "computer." My check engine light went on in 1999. The computer said it was misfiring, when it really was not. Had it replaced under warranty. The dealers said that was a common problem and there was a national back order for it. Had to wait two months for it.

 

Sorry about giving you the wrong code. I was reading it wrong before.

The code is two slow blinks and follow by two fast blinks. A total of 4 blinks with 2 slow and 2 fast. Can you tell me the code stands for?

P.S. I think the problem is cause by the Field controller, but not a 100% sure about that.

 

DragIIcivic, I'm gonna be taking a look at my ECU some time soon... Is it under the passenger dash or under the kickplate? I have a manual around somewhere that would tell me but I don't know where it is. Thanks!

 

It's where the kick panel is. Let's say you are sitting in the passenger side, where your right foot would be, pull the carpet out and you will see the ecu bolted down with 4 bolts i think. I took mines out a long time ago.

 

Code 22: VTEC System Malfunction Short or open in VTEC circuit, bad VTEC solenoid valve, Bad VTEC pressure switch


Your fields would definately cause this....reset the values to stock, then reset your ecu by disconnecting the battery for 15minutes...code should be gone

 

After resetting the ecu, the CHECK light is off for now but I will have to see how it goes in the next few days...

One more question at what rpm is VTEC kick in on D16Y8 sohc-vtec, let me know so I can set my vtec to kick in as stock and I'm going to set the fuel back to stock. And drive it around hopefully the Engine Check light will never come ON again. THANNKS a lot DragIIcivic for all your HELP...

 

stock vtec should be around 5500 on your motor...keep us posted

 

On the prelude it is at 5700, on the D16Y8 I thought it was 4400, but I could be wrong...

 

The b18c is 4400, and is the only vtec motor that engages so early...

d16y8 is 5600rpm

 

Today I drove the car with the Field controller OFF, I was push my car to VTEC all the time for the whole day and engine light never came ON.

Tomorrow I will put turn ON the Field controller and set fuel to zero and vtec to 5600rpm to see what happens....

when an engine light comes on, does it stay on for good everytime u start the car until u shut it off or only when u start.
