Second Gear Doesn't Go In All the Time
Hi,
Second gear on my bf's CRX doesn't seem to go in all the time, especially when you're shifting down, like when you slow down to make a turn. What might be causing this?

shortshifter? I have a shortshifter on my rex and sometimes I can't get into 2nd when downshifting, so I need to brake a little before I can get into it. Just an idea.
When you say it's broken, it's the tranny, right? Or could it be the clutch? (I guess it's most likely not the clutch or else we'd have probs with the other gears, right?)

No, I don't think he has a shortshifter on the car. But even if he did, why would that cause that? I mean, assuming that it's installed correctly...

I don't know why sometimes I can't get into second with a shortshifter.

I drove in his car again last night, and basically, the only way you can get into 2nd gear is from 1st. And it has to be a quick shift. If you leave it in neutral too long, it won't let you in. Shifting from any of the other gears into 2nd doesn't work either.
I don't know too much on the internals of transmissions, but could it be a bad synchro?

Yupp. A bad synchro is my guess too. Try switching your tranny fluid to GM syncromesh. Run a search and you will find tons of threads on the syncromesh. Its supposed to work wonders on bad synchros.

Have you tried double clutching down from 3rd?
My 2000 Civic Si is very picky about when it will go into 2nd from a higher gear. Double-clutch downshifting is sometimes the only way to get it in smoothly.
Problem could possibly be a worn synchro or a worn shift fork.

Mine feels very notchy at times, especially in the cold. Shifts into 2nd are not smooth unless the tranny is warm, otherwise I feel heavy resistance from the synchronizer or it grinds lightly. I am going to switch from the 10w-30 motor oil I'm using in the tranny now to GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (Chevy part number 12377916) sometime soon to see if that helps any. For $8.50 a quart, it had better do something . . .
