help, i think my g/f sub is blown
ok, so i installed a sub and amp in my g/f's 4runner about a month ago, so today my girlfriend called me saying that her amp was on protect, so i told her how to reset everything. it took it off protect. then it went back on, then before work i disconnected the power and pulled out the fuses and put them back in. that seems to keep it off protect temporarily until you put on a hard hitting song. but the problem is now the sub sounds like crap, it rattles like crazy, i think the voice coil or the suspension is shot. it sounds really distorted. obtw, the amp is a Profile california series 600sx mono amp. the sub is a 12" MA audio MA112XI. all hooked up with an 8 guage wiring kit.
Does it sound like its blown? i haven't had a chance to pull the sub out of the box yet to look at everything cause i didn't have enough time tonight.
input would help, if you need anymore info lemme know i think i covered the basics of everything

Sounds like the sub is blown. Same problem I had when my TDX died. It played ok at low volume. Except when I gave it real power it blew the fuses and broke my amp

sounds like your VC melted together at some point lowering the ohms. I've seen it happen a few times, the insulation coating on the VC wire disappears from being over-driven and heating up, causing it to "short" the voice coil dropping it say from 4 to like 2.3 ohms. Amp most likely had no prob with 2.3 ohms at a low level, but as you turned it up the amp overdid its self and was shutting down/blowin fuses, whatever else.

yeah i thought it might be the voice coil, is there any way i could resolder the wire or is the voicecoil basically shot? the amp is fine i believe because it automatically goes on protect when you turn it up.

Yeah, my vc was fried
When I connect my dmm, the resistance was closer to or below 1, it should be close to 2 the way it was wired. Then when I put it on continuity buzz mode, if would stop buzzing after pushing the sub in .25-.5 inch.
