Default amp troubles

ok, so it all started, when my cheapo sony amp started getting really really hot, and from time to time it would randomly cut out. then one day it stopped working. so, back when it stopped working, i kenw nothing about anything electronical. so i've learned more sine then so i thought i'd try to hook it up again. It is a 2 channle amp, and i was only using 1 channel. So i hooked it up to the other channel, and now it jsut looks like it's breathing. i tryed a friend's sub, and it still does the same thing, so i've come to the conclusion that it's the amp. Any ideas or things to check?
recap: something is wrong with the amp, and the sub goes in and out, slowly, and looks like it's breathing, but no sound
thanks

i'm pretty sure it's a 150. It was in the car when i got it, and i really have no clue. no where on the amp does it have a wattage, but it is a 15a fuse, if that helps? The fuses and connections are all good, so the problem lies in the amp. any other ideas?

LMAO, 15 amp fuse? So assuming they leave a little margin for safety, lets say it pulls 12 amps peak. So that's 144 watts, and assuming it's a class A amp w/ 50% efficiency, that means it puts out 72 watts. Yeah, um, buy a new amp.

Ummm, dude true class A amps have not been used in car audio since the 70's.
A class A amp is a tube amplifier, which are currently still used mostly for guitar amps.
I think u mean a class AB amplifier.

I used to work at Best Buy, we sold the sony x-plod amps there. If it is an x-plod amp that is silver and red then your problem is the EQ. They used to have problems like that all the time. Probably 85% of those amps were returned, and around 80% was because of a faulty EQ.
the person that said that it was the rca's before was not far off.
In other words u r screwed, unless u bought it from a store (best Buy, Tweeter, sears)and have an extended warranty.

Do you have a switch to shut off the EQ/LPF? I had an old amp that a guy gave me because he said it didn't work anymore. I flipped it from 100Hz to 50Hz and it started working. WOrth a shot.

FYI.... Amps need a constant power supply to run at their best. If your power supply starts to go down, such as putting a l;oad on the car while its running, or air con, power goes down and you loose watts. check to make sure you have a good ground and efficient power to keep your amp running at its best. If not, check your amp. And next time you get and amp, or if you decide this one still works, hook-up a capacitor to save your batteries cells, and your alternator, as well as keeping a good power supply.

Hey bro, I have a sweet JBL BP300.1 Powervalve monoblock amp im trying to get rid of. Nothing is wrong with it and its only about 6 months old, but it is severely underpowering my subs which can handle 800watts each. It looks brand new, no damage to it at all, asking $175 firm, or trade for some 6 1/2" components. I will also throw in a set of Boston Acoustic 6 1/2" coax speakers that are in my front doors, they are about a year old, nothing wrong with them, just want to upgrade to components.Interested? email me at rkf76@yahoo.com

LMAO! You want $175 for your USED BP300.1??? You can get a NEW BP600.1 (read, TWICE the power) for that price.

I think you get my point.

wow, i didn't realize that. well, maybe buying another bp300.1 would be the better road for me to take, I love the amp, just isn't enough power for my 2 subs. I think 300 on each sub would be sweet! Thanks for the heads up bro

A new BP300.1 is like, $140...so if you can sell your BP300.1 for 100 bux or so, grab a BP600.1. 1 ohm stable goodness.
