anti-freeze question?
i looked under the hood of my 98 accord and the little sticker reads "use only honda coolant or this may seriously shorten engine life" something liek that. anyways is that true, or are they just saying that so i have to bring it back to the dealer for service. Isnt prestone jsut as good...i would think so! thanks for the help!

basically it just means not to use silicate based coolant, or it will ruin multiple seals and quite possiably your water pump, and cause massive leaks from the destroyed seals. From some of the things i've read on the net, it seems to me that it would be best to stick with honda coolant. Ultimately its your decision.

Honda coolant is premixed.
It's is $11 at the dealer and you will need 1 gal for most repairs or a coolant drain/fill. If you would like to read my observations, follow this link: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=597103

Exactly how many gallons of antifreeze do you put in your Honda?

Okay...What quality coolant are you talking about? Never mind...They are all the same anyway...Right? Just throw a gallon of Peak in the radiator. I wouldn’t spend an extra $3 on something that is changed every two years, either…

Really? That's news to me. I always thought most of Honda's chemicals were outsourced to their specs but I had no idea that Type 2 was produced by Shell.
Where did you hear this? It's not because ShellZone is premixed like Honda's antifreeze...Is it? The funny thing is; one of my old tech sheets lists different brands of coolant and their relative rate of corrosion. The sheet gave ShellZone a failing score (Peak and ShellZone were about the same) and Honda's Type 2 one of the best scores (Zerex and Type 2 were the best out of about 15 different brands).
I’ve heard Shell has a 600,000 mile, silicate-free antifreeze they produce for use in Semi’s. If Shell does produce Type 2, maybe they use a slightly different formula than ShellZone. Maybe it’s something along the lines of what Honda specifies…Who knows?

Just out of curiosity, what and where is“our shop”. Wal Mart? Shell!!?? (don’t take this the wrong way…I know a couple of really bright and experienced techs that work in the aftermarket…but they own their own business-oneowns a Shell franchise, too…)

Then you should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I just thought I would offer some observations. There is no way to make a person change their mind once they are convinced they are right. They will have to find out on their own. One day, maybe I will find out tap water and whiskey is better than any antifreeze...LOL.
By the way, you could run vegetable oil instead of 5w/30 in your engine and it would run just fine...For a little while.
