Default Not Hitting VTEC, Please help!

Alright, I have 4th gen prelude with an H22A1 motor. I am having two problems. If anyone can be of any help, that would be GREAT!

1) The speedo isn't working and it throws the speedo engine code.

2) Not hitting vtec and hitting the rev limiter at 6.5k rpm's.

I am pretty sure those two problems are unrelated. VTEC and normal engine rev limiting were working after the speedo broke. I am pretty sure I know how to fix the speedo sensor. But what about the VTEC, low rev problem??? What could possibly be wrong? Any opinions would be awesome!!

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I know VTEC on H22s will delay or sometimes not even kick in if your oil pressure is too low. Check you oil to see if you have enough. The speedo is problably the sensor. Have you taken out your gauge face lately? Messed with the computer?

Oil is good, the speedo is assuredly the sensor. I know how to fix that. Its the vtec not kicking in that is relaly confusing me! Anyone else?

as always, triple check your wiring and make sure that there are no other codes....it has to be up to normal operating temp also...until it's been running a few minutes, it won't hit vtec.....it's probably wiring....u using the USDM p13?

Yeah, but I haven't changed anything... Why would the wire randomly go bad?

Thanks for the input guys,
Jeff

Did the VTEC problem correspond to the speedo code?

make sure the engine is warmed up and then try to hit vtec. if the car is cold, vtec won't engage and redline will go down to 6500 rpm's. for the speedo problem, check the wiring. that's all i can think of.

Its got to be the speed senser.. Vtec will only work if the ECU sees that the car is going faster then 19 MPH.. And if the senser is not working, the ECU thinks your not moving..

I had exactly the same problem on mine. I had taken it to the honda dealer to have a new distributer fitted. While it was there they topped up my oil but used a mineral oil. The motor had fully synthetic in it. After a couple of days, the Vtec would not cut in and the motor would rev out to the limiter. I drained the oil used engine flush, fitted a new filter, refilled with good fully synth. The VTEC is now functioning correctly. I think the main thing about the VTEC is the oil as it is activated hydraulically. Hope you get it sorted.
