I just bought a 1997 honda del sol and i'm thinking about swapping an engine. Which should i swap in. B16A2 or B18C, i know the B18c is better but i wouldn't spend like $900 more just to have 10 more horse. So you think i should go for B16A with 170 HP?

 

Lucky you! Your right, the Del Sols did come with the B16A2 in their chassis.

In my opinion, I'd get the B16A2. It may sound odd to some that a 1.6L would be chosen over a 1.8L, but I'm more trusting of that engine. Besides, the B16 can accept the "Type R" throttle body, intake manifold, ex.manifold, and many other parts. If you can afford it also, grab an LSD!!! Unless I was able to get a B18C5, not the C1, I'd stick with the B16. Something about THAT Civic engine...ooo...

 

Wrong the del sol only came with a b16a3
hey its still a b16, just not a2, like the 99 ones keep that dohc and just work with it, its a great motor

yeah, the del sol i have is the base S model so it's only SOHC 106 HP non vtec. i was looking at http://www.jdmhondaparts.com and i found a B16A 2nd gen for $2300 with 170 HP. and most people i've asked suggested a B16A, from 106 to 170 HP. is that a good gain? you think i'd be able to keep up with my brother, he has a 1998 Acura Integra GSR? hopin to atleast be able to keep up with him with the B16 swap. or i could steal his engine. haha

b16a3 came in the first del sols 92-95 after 96 obd2 was in effect. out came the b16a2. why the generation number change backwards? who knows....

 

I would take the b18c over the b16a because not only does it have 10 more horses but one thing you are over looking is torque which the b18 has a lot more of than the b16. Another engine i would look into if i were you is a b20z nice motor and lots of torque for not too much money. With the del sol being a little bit heaver car the torque is where you will see the most difference so i say b20z but if it has to be one of your two choices that you listed i would go b18c


BTW look at the first few posts it is like a newbie confrence uptalking the b16

 

torque is just as important as horsepower. go with the 1.8 IMO.

Yeah, i think i'm gonna put the B18C in there 178 HP with 134 Torque. that'd be nice in a del sol. and i have the base model so it's only 2300 lbs. but would it be much harder to swap it in than a B16A? oh yeah, is there a way you could put power steering in it? woudl you just need the power steering pump? j/w....

 

I have a buddy that did a N-22 into a del slow,, the thing is sick

 

save your money to put a B18C5 jdm ITR motor in. You should wait.
