leaving car in garage for school year... disconnect battry?
as the title says, i will be leaving my car in the garage while I am at college for the first year. Should I disconnect the negative battery terminal? Also, I heard there is something you can buy so that you dont have to disconnect anything, and you battery won't go dead. Anyone heard anything about this?
There are devices you plug into your cigarette(don't smoke 'em, can't spell 'em) lighter socket and either into a wall-socket in the house, or connected to a solar cell, and it adds just enough juice to keep it alive. I'm sure any dept. store, auto-parts or sporting goods store might have them.
Another thing you may want to think about is putting it up in the air so your tires dont get flat spots.

if you leave your car sitting in one spot long enough, the weight of the car creates flat spots in the tires (where the tires contact the ground). best idea is to put it up on jackstands if you can. i'd also give it a fresh oil change....you don't want all the acids from the used oil just sitting in the engine and in the oil pan
also, slap some fuel stabilizer in the tank.

Make sure you throughly wash and wax it also. Do you have a car cover?
edit: make sure you leave it with a full tank of gas also.

before storing a car change the engine and trans oil and i would put a 100% pure antifreze in the radiator so it has less of a chance of corroding the radiator as far as the tires go put the car up on jack stands it will solve that problem and go buy a "battery tender" if you cant find one go to a motorcycle /jet ski dealer they sell these for people who store their bikes .. it costs like 40 bucks hook it up and your battery will be fine .... then go to autozone and buy this stuf called sta-bul you pour it in your gas and let your car run for a bit so it gets all through fuel lines..... thats basicly it also even if your car will be in the garage i would use a car cover on it people like to use a car as a shelf when it is in the garage so cover it to protect it
